His appearance with (cataracts???) immediately makes this photo interesting. It would be so easy for this to come across as a snapshot of a most interesting individual. The plastic lawn chair, dirty t shirt, etc lends this image to being plain, with the exception of his eyes. However, your even lighting and post processing of his skin really makes the image, and builds character beyond his eyes. It would appear that there is a slight halo around his hair, on the wood surface. I don't know if this is natural, or a soft layer mask, but everything else is flawless. A 10 from me...

Great portrait! I'm sorry but i don't like the PP, i think it's too much and it left a white glow around him. Maybe i'm wrong...sorry if i was rude, good luck.

Voted earlier coming back to leave comments. There is very much a story behind this photo portrait of this elderly gentleman. I/we the viewer experience a level of disquiet as we look upon him. He is not smiling. The eyes that normally are the window of the soul are shut. The eyes are no longer seeing. Sights that were once common to him are now just something that lives in his mind's eye. As much as he can no longer see and is blind, we too are blind for we can no longer read his expression by looking into his eyes. Emotions are hidden unless he chooses to show a smile or frown. But we, the viewers can be blind in another fashion. Our discomfort may get the better of us that we choose to avoid this sight. He has seen and I am sure has many stories to tell some sad, some with joy and some that may even bring genuine laughter. What has he seen, what can he tell us, what can he teach us about life and perhaps ourselves? These are all questions that go through my head as I gaze upon this man. This photo shows a human interest story...one that I am sure there are more details to be read from the commentary that at this point in time is hidden to us.

Wow....makes you want to look and look again. Such an emotive shot with very successful processing. The only thing that bothers me, and maybe it's just my monitor, is his forehead and nose - they're coming across over saturated, orangey highlighted.

Wow. A powerful photo in many ways. The photo almost has an HDR quality to it, though I think I would have preferred a more 'natural' look to the light and colours. IMHO.

cool capture

03/11/2009 12:17:06 AM
The processing just kills this for me. The subject is so interesting you don't need so much artifice to make the picture look cool. It really distracts from his face because I am thinking about how the original probably looked.
