Cropped, converted to bw, gamma tweaks, some sharpening.

I like this photo so much that I chose it over prettier more finished candidates that would have done at least marginally better in this challenge.

ubique's comments are my wonderful reward - he is spot on about the scenario, although I very much appreciate all who took the trouble to express their impressions, insight and advice.

DOG NOTES: Pudder is fine, although she is currently struggling to regrow hair which was shaved for the cruciate ligament operation. I know dogs are generally cheerful, but she is really the most cheerful of all, having been loved ecstatically by the people who got her as a rescue dog.

Nicely composed image of this little group. It's amzing how well the dogs function with this indignity. (After the initial freak out, that is.)

That's funny, considering how very, very few shots tell a story in this challenge... and this is one of them.

Good for you for avoiding the DPC pretty stuff and putting in what you want. This is great because it represents life, captured! Of course it's a dog's life, but I'm an animal lover and I understand that. What happened to the puppy? Why only one paw bandaged? Thanks for posting a photo that makes you stop and wonder :)

This is such an oddball image, I got to enjoy it :-) I wonder what he's looking at? I wonder what happened to his paw? Those clown collars always make for poignant thoughts, too. Nicely processed, 7 from me.

Aw, poor puppy. I like that the frame cuts the men off in the middle, makes it seem like it's the dog's POV.

A good workmanlike photo. With a subject that isn't resonating with me.

Unusual image of our 4 legged friend. Very nicely tones and detail. Reminds me a bit of that famous dog story "Jock Of The Bushveld" Did you read it? If not it is a definite recommendation. You will love it, I promise. 7

An interesting portrait. I think the B&W adds an extra dimension here.

My dogs have had to wear these over the years. I like the fact the image is about the dog and the men are just props in his shot.

poor little fellow, don't they look funny with these on :)

Don't take this the wrong way but as I see DPC as a learning experience here is my frank critique:

This comes across as a snapshot. By that I mean that I feel that anybody standing where you were with a camera could have gone click and got this result. I think a photographer should aim to do more than that. I may be wrong and perhaps you do have more of a story to your shot but the fact is that it doesn't come across to the viewer.

As an example, if you were in Paris and saw the Eiffel Tower you could hold the camera and go click. You'd have a shot that millions of other tourists have and would be good as a record of your holiday. I think at DPC you need more than that. You need to consider the POV - make it something that enhances the tower (include a flowerbed or kissing couple in the foreground), make use of lighting (dusk for shadows), composition (maybe include the buildings beside it to get a sense of scale).

I hope this helps and please don't be offended, I'm only offering an opinion.

Well, I just like this for its nonconformity. The photograph is deliberately unfinished; nothing is certain. And that lets the viewer into it to wander around and investigate. The guys are wearing work clothes. They're not young guys. They're discussing something. No rush, though ... it's something that requires some measured consideration. As much looking as talking. Are they nurserymen, perhaps? The dog has an injured leg, and so must wear the embarrassing Elizabethan collar. But he doesn't neglect his duties, watching his master's flanks. It's a charming, mature photograph and makes some demands of the viewer. That's the best kind. 9.

Now this is just odd. I wish the men weren't there and cut off. It's awkward to me. Perhaps a closeup of the dog's face and the collar would have worked better? I like the job you did on processing.

this photo seems a bit too confused and disorganized to me. my eyes do focus on the dog, but quickly bounce around. its hard to convince my eyes what to look at.

poor dog, my little guy hates to wear those cones, I think I would of cropped this image a little lower, perhaps just below the hands that are in the pcocket, makes the photo a little less busy and bring more attention to the dog, good conversion to B&W

Awww. Poor pooch. I love the quality of light and textures in this shot, but the composition is a bit odd, as though the people and the dog were not connected. Their body position makes them seem busy with their own thing while the dog is on alert for something else. Makes me stop and try to figure out the back story...

Poor guy... I remember when my dog had one of these collars... he would have the hardest time going through doorways... it would always get stuck on the door frame. Cute expression on his face.
