I only wish I had taken this today, that would mean I was in Maui :-)
It's been a while since I played with HDR, and I wanted to try the technique in this thread so I went back to my Maui archive, knowing that most of what I shot was for HDR. My method was very similar but I learned some great new tips. This image was only two exposures. I did the combining and tonemapping in Photomatix, then brought into Photoshop to adjust and fix the ugly parts of the HDR by replacing with parts from the original images. I think I left the grass a bit too light, I'll keep it in mind for next time. Here are the two originals:

I think the grass is just right to balance the sky. Another excellent HDR.

Wow, spectacular!! You've got hdr nailed! Maui is one of my dream locations, someday I'll make it there. Hopefully while I'm still young enough to enjoy it.

Oh this is just soooo lovely. I haven't figured out HDR yet. Sometimes it's almost too much but this has the rich depth that I love in a high dynamic range photo without any overkill. REALLY REALLY nice.

this definitely proves that hdr is the best way to accomplish tone control. it does for digital that the "zone system" did for BW film. you have used a very beautiful example. the grass is purely subjective, but it does slightly overwhelm the highlights of the water.

Thanks for the originals. It's pretty amazing how you can get the final exposure of that sky so perfect. I always have such hard time. I just bought some neutral density gradient filters to try while I shoot, but I want to try this, too. It will be interesting to see what works best for me. Anyway, great final product!
