Every 1000 comments, I have tried to pick an image from a DPC photographer / portfolio that I really admire, have a good look through and find an image to write a longer comment for.

This is my 3000th comment and it was a no brainer of a choice...

I've been through your portfolio a number of times but I'd never come across this image before. It is quite wonderful. The use of the blur, the coloration, the distressed overlay, all work so well. Most of all though, like much of your work, it is the sense of life and world that you capture that is so fascinating and beautiful.

The feeling we get from the image can transport us there, feeling the warmth of the day, but resist the temptation of the story and we find that the image as photograph is amazingly constructed, light and shade laid out for us in layers, cool coloration juxtaposed with unquestionable warmth, the communication of the cusp of night and day - tremendous.

Then there are the figures... As others have said, almost alien-like - but nonetheless they capture our essence.

A standout picture from a standout portfolio.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Paul

Oh wow. For me, this is a perfect image. First, the square crop, not seen nearly enough on this site. Then the wonderful bands of color, and each filled with a distinct element: The sky with its grain and setting sun, the top water band with its mystery vessel, the the wave at center, the lower band with the people and the sun's reflection, and the bottom, solid base with a diaphanous membrane connecting it to the rest of the image. Sigh. When I grow up I'd like to be able to do this kid of work :-)

Nick, I was going through my favourites folder and happened on this again. My instant reaction was, crap I love this. Made me realise how I should revisit the favourites folder more often. :) Can't double fave something, but at least I can comment twice:)

I love the horizontal elements. There are four separate planes of existence in the composition. Great humanoid forms and a vessel to take them off who-knows-where.

Great processing.

for me the single approaching wave pulls this together. provides a certain unity. even though highly stylized this is a very natural scene. bravo!

this looks like a strange alien landscape .. photographs sent back to earth from one of your jaunts to another planet .. the shapes in the foreground are definitely aliens ... i was starting to wonder a couple of posts back, i may have said you seem to be developing some alien qualities .. well this confirms it .. you sure do get around .. !!
sorry i tend to over-do it sometimes .. seriously tho, it has a catchy and appealing feel nick & i love your acid type processing ..
