Just as your title suggests, this image is a little too dark. It looks like you shot in bright sunlight, so you could have opened the aperture or used a bit longer shutter speed to get some more light. A pass of Unsharp Mask would also help this photo look a bit more bold.

You must really believe in making taking a picture a real challenge. This is a tough shot, and - for me - your entered result has some issues. The major one is lack of focus (in two senses - the sharpness of the image, as well as a major focal point to draw the eye). The large dark area in the bottom half draws my attention - because of both its size and location, but there is literally nothing there to see. I do like the contrast of the red and black - on the emotive side, this has strong contrasting elements, where even the positive element (red) is not entirely so. This almost feels like "danger!" or "warning!".
