Langdon, I love you like a brother, but we need at least 200KB on these!

[Jun. 16th, 2009 09:50:11 PM]

This is scoring well so Langdon is to be forgiven (!). It was a tedious and frustrating last minute edit trying to get an output image without JPG artifacts. Square crops with lots of details aren't conducive to basic editing. I ended up sizing it down to 600x600. Black and white was initially an artistic choice, but then it became a necessary one.

The boy in the picture and some other children were playing under the overpass at Point State Park (downtown Pittsburgh) during the Three Rivers Arts Festival a couple Saturdays ago. I shot a few quick pictures but wasn't even thinking about the challenge at the time. My most successful entries seem to happen under such circumstances.

alanfreed got a frantic PM from me after his comment. I hadn't (and still haven't) seen the picture he speaks of, but I think it was printed after I took this. Apparently my idea wasn't so original.

Post-processing was in PSP X2: crop/rotate, channel mixer (2/3 blue channel, 1/3 green), and something new I'm trying -- a color balance layer under the channel mixer to adjust the contrast and tones. It worked so well that I didn't need levels, curves or clarify. USM was 2/100/6 (I think).

Thanks for all the comments and feedback.

I thought it was cool to see so many stones layed out in such an interesting pattern. I like how the light is falling on the stones so as to create the shadows and help keep the stones from blending together. Cool photo. Congrats on the top 20!

One of my favourites of the challenge. It is interesting how the child almost confuses the scale, rather than clarifying it. Pleasingly observed.

i would really like to see this in color, the attention is taken over from the kid because of the pebbles, eventhough that was the challenge, for me the kid accentuates the pebbles, wheres as in the b/w shot there is not enough contrast

If the boy was sitting that title would have been perfect :)

boy a bit too far to the upper right. a rule-of-thirds grid would have helped this one. super concept. 7.

Keep going back and forth debating if the child adds to the photo or takes away from it. On one side the photo is strong enough of its own with the stones and the patterns within them. On the other, I wonder if the child gives the shot balance. Something for your eye to grab onto. if that makes sence. The lighting is great and love how it just continues off into the distance. Nicely done!

Inspired by the shot in the Post-Gazette the other day, eh? :) Assuming this is beneath the bridge at Point State Park, I nearly shot the same thing the other day.

I'm glad you picked to do this in B&W... and for some reason I love how the kid is looking down. Very nice.
