Challenge: Never Seen on DPC! (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: Challenges
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM
Location: Plymouth, MA
Date: Jun 24, 2009
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/125
Date Uploaded: Jun 25, 2009

Image shot at low tide in Plymouth Harbor, right next to Mayflower II. There are, strangely, a whole LOT more pigeons than seagulls there; hundreds and hundreds of them.

I don't know what predator got this one, but it was obviously a scene of recent carnage, because those seaweed/grasses are underwater half the day.

Shot at 200mm, handheld, with the 5D from the seawall above the harbor.

Why is this in my favourites?

I like the imagary that this photo puts into the viewers mind. The title 'Death of a pigeon', and all the flattened grass suggest that there was a drawn out struggle, and that the pigeon didnt go easy. Very few shots are able to capture that action without being gratuitous or violent. Its one of my favs because it is unique, and powerful.

Whoa, that's a surprise! Makes up for the disappointingly low score...

Ah, this was yours! I love how the few feathers stand out against the swirl of the grass. This was one of my high scorers, btw.

This is VERY abstract. The grass creates an almost dizzying image! I love this

Oh, it has been seen before - a pigeon in the jaws of a grey cat.

Even though it's artistic, unfortunately I've seen a number of pictures of dead birds in various stages of decay. Here's one example:

Very emotive..simple composition and yet the extreme textures work well and don't detract. Very nice.

The sharpness of the photo seems to do well with the gritty disgusting pigeon body. Comp is nice. But still yuck and sad.

Interesting take on the challenge, I like the grass even though it makes a little dizzy and the wings add sadness to the shot. the single feather finishes this off nicely for me.

Wow. This is really good, I like the way the grass seems to be in a circle, like it's enveloping the wings. And I like that one lone feather to the left of the wings, it's sad but also gives a sense of hope & freedom.

Hmmm... it's oddly interesting. Who'da thought it? :) I think it's the grass that does it for me. (not voting)

i think that the image is too flat, and that you needed some more lateral light to give a more dramatic feeling tho this dramatic theme. i really like the pattern of the grass...

Hmmmmmmmm. Lawnmower accident?
Interesting similarities in the textures of the wings and the mown grass.

I'm fairly certain I've seen this in a challenge, but aside from that, you have some great textures, colors, and composition going on here
