Top View of a dragonfly. Pretty extreme crop.

Vision dominates their behaviour, including predation and looking for mates. The compound eye is made up of ommatidia which is a visual unit consisting of a lens system and a group of light sensitive cells. A large dragonfly may have up to 30,000 ommatidia in each compound eye. Each ommatidium collects one visual information, together form a mosaic image in the dragonfly's brain

This dragonfly is very alive , so it was a pretty difficult shot. I could not even use a monopod for this shot as it was just not practical , so I was shooting hand-held with with my 105mm. The wind blew occasionally making it even more difficult. I was just shooting away hoping to get a couple of sharp shots that I could crop later.

Not a usual perspective for a dragonfly shot , hopefully DPC voters will take to this kindly.

Congratulations! I just had to comment on the fact that this has some noise in it, but handheld at ISO 2000 with an extreme crop and some wind it's an amazingly clear shot. Did you use noise reduction? USM? Thanks for the dragonfly vision lesson.

I'm not a fan of bugs per say, but I do like the detail in your image. The composition and lighting also work for me. Good luck in the challenge.

This is SHARP... not a fan of the centred composition, but the sharpness and colours make up for that somewhat.

In my top four. 10. Fits the challenge perfectly and is an unusual angle, taken sharply and interestingly. (voted earlier, back to comment)
