There is a purpose behind the process...all be it a conceptual one. Lets see if anyone takes the time to notice. Getting ready for some DNMC action on this though there are flowers...I do find it "unique" and it will definitely stand out in the field.

Okay, first, it's not a flower (yes, yes, I see the apron. What's your point?). Second, it's boring. Third, the framing is static. And fourth... hmm, well there isn't a fourth. But I just don't like it.

...rudest comment I have EVER received.

[Jul. 15th, 2009 09:14:04 PM]

...until the comment posted above, I was reveling in my low score, 2 favs, great comment world...still am. It just stinks when someone throws a turd in the punch bowl, ya know?

I suppose I should be honored to get any sort of feedback from such an expert yes?

This shot is very nice. I'm not sure I completely understand what you were trying to say here but I like it very much. I think it met the challenge well. I like the focus and the color and the execution.

My work certainly does not appeal to everyone due to the fact I tend to make photographs that please me. That fact that anyone else enjoys them is icing on the cake.

Well said! :)

I think it's not only a spectacular usage of the lense but a fantastic approach to the challenge subject and a great study. Composition is static but I don't find it to be a flaw, it's solid and grabs the viewer and won't let go. The focus is exceptional and I think that, with rare exceptions, it makes sense that a LB shot has a distinct focal point. Colours are beautiful and the fact that they're fading away towards the edges of the frame in a gradial motion towards the grey makes them more vivid than they'd otherwise be. And that title is something...

I'm just grossed out that people take everything so literally. I gave this an 8. LOVED IT. (and that comment - pure BUNK and BS)

Rachel, your style is so very, well, you - unique, beautiful and memorable. It's no secret that I'm a big fan of your photography. :) If ignorance is truly bliss, then kivgaen must be in 7th heaven!

I need to be clear on this. I will expand on what Mark and Karen mentioned.

More than upsetting me, the comment angered me.

It is not what was said, but how it was said. It is absolutely alright that people dislike this photograph, or any other. I expect it even. My work certainly does not appeal to everyone due to the fact I tend to make photographs that please me. That fact that anyone else enjoys them is icing on the cake.

Chinarosepetal, I will never mark that comment as helpful. I will never condone bad manners, arrogance, and as a friend so rightly put it...\"willful ignorance.\" The reasons given by kivgaen were at best, highly elementary reactions. The reactions seemed to be that of a total beginner who seems to be unwilling to look beyond the surface and explore the deeper depths of a photograph. A beginner who seems to think they know it all. I cannot abide any photographer that thinks they know it all and that there is a strictly right way and a wrong way to make an image. I\'ve been taking pictures for a very long time and am always seeking out new ways to challenge myself, new ways to look at and see the world I live in. I hope that things change for this person. I hope they find their curiosity and indulge it. I love when new photographers want to grow and learn...and through this curiosity and hunger, eventually find their own voice.

Also, as Karen briefly mentioned, it is a highly conceptual photograph, and statements such as this:

yes, yes, I see the apron. What\'s your point?

lead my to believe they came from the mouth of a very creatively immature, uninspired viewer/photographer. It just went over his/her head. That\'s fine. Now don\'t misunderstand me, I know people are at different levels technically and conceptually with their photography. I also know some photographers never even enter into the conceptual arena. That\'s fine too. But because someone is new at this, does it give them a pass to blurt out whatever they please? Is this sort of arrogance ever acceptable no matter what experience the viewer may or may not have? No, it most certainly isn\'t. Perhaps many will think I sound arrogant with what I have just written. So be it. I\'ve been doing this for over 25 years, so I have something fairly solid to base my reactions on and wanted to explain why I found the comment offensive. I always try to be thoughtful with my commenting, and if there is something I don\'t like about an image, I try to find something I do like and make a compliment sandwich, which is much more satisfying than a diatribe of so called technical faults and broken rules. I like to believe there is no right or wrong in photography...just different. And if a photograph just doesn\'t move me in some way, I say nothing at all.

When an opinion is expressed about one of my photographs, I have the right to address that opinion. It is a two way street.

Instead of this:

Okay, first, it\'s not a flower (yes, yes, I see the apron. What\'s your point?). Second, it\'s boring. Third, the framing is static. And fourth... hmm, well there isn\'t a fourth. But I just don\'t like it.

why not say...I\'m afraid this image just doesn\'t appeal to me.

Photography is vast and wide. The same can be said about the opinions, tastes, experiences, education and willingness to learn and grow within the realm that is photography. But is there really a need for people to be unkind and disrespectful? And the snark of this, hmm, well there isn\'t a fourth ...just not necessary.

I love it,, the focus work is so unique! If i have learned anything from sending in photos here is that there will ALWAYS be that one that makes an uncalled for comment, don't let them get you down :)

I'm sure if Rachel ever takes a photograph for the small minded, it'll be a hit with kivgaen!

Don't worry about that comment, I got something that was like that but way tamer than yours. If you look at the comments from this user, you will figure out that they are in a photoclub of some sorts. Let it slide off your back like water,

PS I loved your entry, original, thoughtful and the blur is amazing!

What he said... it's not the sentiment that's objectionable, it's how it was delivered.

As for the conceptual nature of the shot, the more I look at it the more it makes me think of a further subtext, possibly intended, possibly not - the choice of focus placement and how it aligns with a certain area of the body, combined with a title that makes us wonder what constitutes a "good" wife. Is is only domesticity that's implied here by the apron, or something else?

Well, if it helps balance the silly comment, I thought it was one of the best in the challenge. And definitely NOT boring. But to each his own I suppose. Reading the other comments, I am clearly not alone. Well done, it's a nicely creative take on this challenge.

What a pleasure to find something this original here. I love this, and it provided a nice break from all the other traditional flower pics.

This photo has the look of someone familiar. I can't place it...

Lensbaby, I assume, and put to very good use. Great take on the challenge, great tones, great title (but that doesn't count for anything). Currently a 9. The next time I look at it I may have to bump it up a notch.
