Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Deep DOF II (Basic Editing)
Camera: Nikon D90
Lens: Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Nikon
Location: Kogel Bay, South Africa
Date: Sep 21, 2009
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 20 seconds
Galleries: Landscape, Seascapes
Date Uploaded: Sep 21, 2009

I recently bought myself a Hoya ND400 9 stop neutral density filter, and wow, it really opens so many doors for a landscape photographer. Never before could I shoot long exposures while a mountain is still lit in brilliant light. The blues were this blue in the raw file, I even dropped the saturation a bit. I really hope this does well. I feel that the rocks leading the eye all the way to the tip of the mountain in the backround, are all in focus, and thus meets the challenge.

The reason for the slight vignetting, is because I had to stack the ND400 and a cokin filter holder (for the 3 stop grad). The photo was shot at 14mm.

I would have preferred to have been allowed to selectively edit certain areas of this shot, but the rules are the rules.

--------------------------------------
Aaaaargh! Soooo close. Sigh. I gave this shot a re-edit during the week in an attempt to get the colours more natural. Do you think the new version might have given me an extra 0.03? :)

about the re-edit. In order to make a fair election , post it at 640px and confirm it is also edited under basic editing rules. send a pm when it's done (I mean in case you decide to do it).

OK. Although the re-edit version has more realistic hues, I like the color palette of the one you entered better. It gives a more mysterious look and I think that goes better with the object of the technic you used. That said, I think the wow factor of the one you entered is better.

Thanks for the feedback. Appreciated.

Edit: Forgot to mention that when I said "realistic" I was thinking of sunlight, but you are creating artificial darkness here so I like the darkness and consistent cooler tones of the first one better.
