Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: 47 Steps (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D700
Lens: Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED
Location: Sydney Australia
Date: Nov 8, 2009
Aperture: f/5
ISO: 2500
Shutter: 1/30
Date Uploaded: Nov 8, 2009

I did this as close to the spirit of the challenge as I could. Since I live in a high-rise it's not possible to take 35 straight in one direction so what I did is:

15 steps from my door to the elevator
20 steps from the elevator to the corner (continued in the same direction as before)
6 steps from the corner to the mailroom entrance
6 steps into the mailroom

I'm hoping people don't deduct points because they don't believe I followed the challenge, it was a fortunate chance that I was able to perfectly reach the mailroom as I've been itching to enter this sort of shot into a challenge since I moved into this building!

Had to do a fair bit of editing to clean this up as it was taken at ISO2500 (I love my D700!).

RAW adjusted in Aperture
Lens corrected to remove distortion
Straightened
Cropped
Curves
Selected floor area and added brightness / contrast layer to bring out reflection
Nik Define to remove noise
Heavy use of USM to bring out details
Resize and SFW

It's funny, I also thought I had commented on this one after the challenge was over. I loved this. It was one of my highest scoring in the challenge.

I loved the reflections in the floor.

I thought I had commented on this when it was in the challenge, honestly. The stark contrast of the red and the black are what really sell this photo to me. This would be an interesting room in its own right, without the red mailboxes, but that's the element that really sets it apart. I like that you included enough of the wall for us to see it curve around. I also think this might have been pretty neat as a vertically oriented shot, with the bottom of the frame parallel and nearly resting upon the wall so that the mailboxes trailed away "upwards" as it might seem. Sorta reminiscent of 2001 when he's doing his running exercise in the rotating chamber. Great shot either way.

I appreciate your honesty and think even though you couldn't follow it exactly, you did the next best thing. The shot looks great, congrats!

i love everything about this picture. the colors, the contrast and especially all of the lines. i like how the lines on the floor are so well defined and straight while the reflection in the ceiling is so chaotic

I like the curvature & repeating elements of the very red mailboxes juxtaposed against the black floor in which they are reflected broken up by the lower left centre lines in yet another direction. Between contrasting colours & lines, this is a real eyecatcher & a joy to view.

Is this truly following the instructions of from YOUR HOME DOOR walking 35 steps, turn and go 6 steps, turn again and take 6 steps? Kinda hard to believe this one, but what the heck, there have been others I doubted too.
