I took this from the car-park at the centre of this map

Here's a re-sized version on the original for comparison:

And a wider view:

Many thanks for all the kind comments and even kinder constructive criticism. This is my 7th anniversary of being here and a 7 score is the perfect anniversary present, so thank you.

To answer a couple of the comments:
A couple of people mentioned a greenish cast to the tower, which is a bit too subtle for me to see, and it wasn't afternoon light, it was taken about 10 in the morning. It may be Southern England, but we are still at a relatively high latitude so the sun isn't getting all that high in the sky at this time of year.

I wonder if the "greenish cast" that is mentioned is actually the moss and lichens growing on the side of the tower and buildings, a sight that may be unusual to folks from younger, drier places? Top Tor and Pil Tor area is one of my favourite dog walking spots and we often camp down at Cockingford Farm. Quintessential English countryside captured beautifully.

Fascinating picture, especially for a yank like me. It's like something out of Robin Hood. Congrats on HM!

Many congratulations on your 4th place and new personal best. Very well deserved; this was a lovely shot and was one of my 3 top scoring shots in this challenge. Devon beats Exmoor on this one!

Beautiful scene.

Immediately, I was interested in this image. The colors are great, the subject, is very nice. The photograph is clean, I like it.

Lovely!

Nicely done. I like the perspective. The way the tree lines lead down to the church is great. And the greens are terrific.

Wonderful depth and detail in this great landscape composition. I love the way the hill in the background sweeps upwards behind the churchyard and village. Everything's bathed in a lovely light. 10
Hi Kevin(paynekj) I see that are 3 entries from the Devon area in this challenge. Since that is where you reside and this image is the only one taken with a Pentax K10D plus you used GIMP this must be yours.

Not the most spectacular of this challenge, but a simple and convincing image, very carefully composed, and standing out by its almost monochromatic elegance.
One of my preferred.

All along, down along, out along lee.

Great afternoon lighting, nice and sharp.

Is this temba's?
I went with my family to Widecombe Fair in 1970, hence the quote from the famous song. ;-)

This is 'Landscape'. And...what I think as a super excellent, straight forward photograph. What a breath of fresh air...thanks! 10

Very beautiful...you really did a great job of showing that old church in it's surroundings! That green is so rich, I would love to see this in person some day.

nice colors and great capture!

I love the sense of having a bird's perspective. Beautiful greens, great composition.

awesome landscape! great colors!

How fabulous. Reminds me of my visit to the Cotswolds this summer. Beautiful scenery, but the shot looks a little foreshortened, and I think the church tower could have been made to pop a little more, or at least remove the green cast on it.

Wonderful viewpoint.....what a beautiful scene.
11/23/2009 03:29:59 PM
Amazing detail and POV. Very strong composition (you've got quite an eye). Great lighting & tones. What a refreshing and welcome change from the DPC standard intensely colored sunrise/sunset over a long-exposure seascape.

This is superb use of a longer focal length. I cannot fault the composition. Great colours and perfect processing. I am not so sure what the average voter would say, but I really hope this one ends up on the front page! (no vote)

I like this interesting image. The church and some of the buildings appear greenish where I would imagine them to be more gray. Suggest an increase in the mid and and lighter tones in the blue channel to remove some of that yellow...
