Officers Row at Sandy Hook, New Jersey, August 2009. These houses are grand and gorgeous, but all but one of them sit in disrepair. They overlook Sandy Hook Bay.

Taken with The Populist, my homemade, completely cardboard, 35mm pinhole camera.

The houses are beautiful. Huge rooms, mile high ceilings, gorgeous woodwork, windows, etc. There are about twelve of them, but only one is restored and can be toured. They all have bad roofs. Story goes that when the military turned the houses over to the state park in the 1960's, they did the park a "favor" by first tearing off the 75-year-old (or so) slate roofs and installing shingles. The slate roofs never leaked; the shingled roofs started leaking after ten to twenty years. The park can't afford to replace them, and now all the houses suffer water damage.

As far as the photograph, I never thought of this photograph as terribly sharp. As far as what makes a sharp pinhole photo, I think the key is a thin, clean, round, optimal-sized hole. The shorter the focal length, the smaller the hole should be, but it's not a linear relationship. There are online calculators that will give you the optimal sized hole for a given focal length.

Having a solid camera is another variable that people overlook. When you're talking about long exposure times with cameras made of flimsy material such as cardboard, camera shake happens easily.

I want one of those houses to work on. They're what I've always wanted but they're not popular round these parts.

This is very sharp for a pinhole. What do you think makes for a sharp image with pinholes? Abundant lighting? A perfectly sized pinhole? Distance from pinhole to film? All of the above?

This is fabulous. It's really sharp too considering what it actually is

I really like how the tree slants with the roof....

I like this from-the-ground perspective, makes for a very dynamic angling of the houses, and that tree balances the other side of the composition with an opposing direction.

fantastic shot with your homemade cam! somehow the big, bold subject matter keeps the sprockets from being overpowering.

Wow. I grew up in an Officer's house, built in 1912, but nothing as grand as this.
