Challenge: Contre-Jour II (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-450D Rebel XSi
Lens: Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 II
Location: 1,200 Feet Above The Outskirts of Orlando, FL.
Date: Dec 4, 2009
Aperture: f/13

Shutter: 1/640 Sec.
Galleries: Sky, Landscape
Date Uploaded: Dec 7, 2009

This image was a quick point and shoot type of set up. I can't really use the term "set up", because there were 10 other people in the basket positioning for their own perfect morning shot.

I was trying to tone down the sun and even the photo out, but wasn't sure about how to approach that. Hopefully it is still visually appealing to you all.

Thanks.

Thank you Sherlock Holmes (bjoern)... read two posts below yours and that was origin of the copy and paste you peformed.

Once again... my mistake on not fully reading the rules for MY FIRST SUBMISSION. So chill out, no further investigating needed, spend your time perhaps taking pictures, being constructive, etc..
12/22/2009 10:21:15 AM
This is outstanding no matter the DQ.

Well - the exif information in the picture says:
# Original Datum/Zeit = 2009:06:01 06:04:52
# Digitalisierung Datum/Zeit = 2009:06:01 06:04:52

In any event a beautiful shot.

This is a fantastic image. Too bad about the date.
I just wonder why you entered the date the pic was taken as "Dec 4, 2009" at the time of submission on Dec 7,2009?.

Don't put too much stock in the stray low scores. When my brother was showing my mom one of his entries which was still in voting stage (not on this challenge), I noticed she kept hitting "1"... she thought she was clicking on the right link to get back to the "first page".

The colors are a bit too saturated for my tastes, but that seems to be the norm for a lot of the winning/high rated images here. A perfect crop on this one for me would have been just above the horizon. Just my opinion. Congrats on achieving the winning vote, even if it was short lived. :)

Great shot for your first entry, too bad about the DQ, hope it doesn't discourage you.
12/17/2009 09:38:00 AM
Glad you're going to eat the DQ with good grace. Come back and share some more nice images like this and they're sure to be appreciated.
12/17/2009 09:35:36 AM
it still remains a very very good photograph, the ribbon is subjected to DPC rules, but this not meant that the photograph is not good.... many many compliments.
12/17/2009 04:53:43 AM
As for my first entry ever on this website I should have read the rules more carefully before I submitted my image.

Still thank you for all of the comments, and next challenge I will make sure to read everything before I submit.

This is horrible. Im so sorry. It is a fabulous picture though and you should be proud of it!

Hey Jac, Scroll down this thread about 8 or 9 posts and you will find the answer to your question.

Shame about the DQ. Great shot whenever it was taken though. Looking forward to seeing your next challenges.
12/16/2009 01:39:51 PM
Bummer about the DQ... It's a stunning shot!
12/16/2009 01:05:38 PM
You're just hitting all the firsts of DPC with this one! Ribbon winner, awesome score, and now (most likely) a DQ. Welcome!!!
12/16/2009 12:49:17 PM
Oh yeah - hands down. I actually gasped when I opened this during voting. Congrats on the well deserved Blue.
12/16/2009 11:26:06 AM

Oh man! Welcome to DPchallenge! What a way to make a grand entrance! I just saw the note by Magnum_za tho. Oh noooo! It was taken in June??? Darn! He's right. . . there are very strict rules about the photo having to have been taken the week the challenge is announced! Well, congratulations and way to introduce yourself anyway! The photo is absolutely fabulous!

Welcome to DPC. Congrats on your first ribbon.
12/16/2009 07:39:34 AM
You did it on your first challenge to? Amazing! I did to with second place. Now we have to keep up the good work! :>)
12/16/2009 04:57:35 AM
That wasn't an all to bad start on your DPC membership! Blue ribbon, 11 favorites, as well as your photo topped the "highest rated photograph" on both camera and lens. Stunning photo!

ETA: Some votes low on purpose, I'm not sure why. There are hundreds of threads in the forum discussing low voters. Hopefully something can be done with it soon.

Thank you to everyone for voting!! This was indeed my first ever submission, beginners luck I'd guess.

I stumbled upon this site after this shot was taken and flipped throught the challenges, remembered I had this particular shot and entered it. Awesome... so awesome, I need to pay up and get the membership so I can join all of the challenges. But I'm not sure I'll be able to repeat a Blue Ribbon anytime soon.... then again beginners luck may last for a streak.

But why would some people vote "1", and then no one vote "2"... just to see the score drop?? Lame, lame, lame.

Thanks again for voting and for all of the commments. I'll be back with more!
12/16/2009 03:50:06 AM
There r 5 guys voted u 1!!!! hhhmmm.... i understand. :)
12/16/2009 02:03:54 AM
Beautiful. I love ballooning, so congratulations on your Blue Ribbon.
12/16/2009 01:42:13 AM
WD on your 1st Entry and 1st (Blue) Ribbon. Now the real hard work begins...repeating it!
Obviously I voted 10 based on my in-voting comment.
12/16/2009 01:40:35 AM
The elements came together nicely for this shot. You will have a tough time topping this one. What a grand start.
Welcome to DPC.
12/16/2009 01:36:21 AM
Congrats on a ribbon! Beautiful image!
12/16/2009 12:56:48 AM
I like this a lot. It's so beautiful.
12/16/2009 12:33:01 AM
Oh, yes! A VERY good way to start. Fantastic shot. Congrats on your blue ribbon.
12/16/2009 12:28:30 AM
Congratulations! Super photo! A graduated filter in your kit would have gone a ways towards taming the sun for you.
12/16/2009 12:15:31 AM
Congrats on ur win!!
12/16/2009 12:09:59 AM
Congrats on a great shot for this challenge. Next time using spot metering on the sun might bring you better results with the blown out highlights etc. You mentioned it in your description so I thought I'd offer that advice. Well done.

Edit:

I just noticed this was your first challenge, and you got the blue. That's awesome. The red went to a first challenge submission as well. What are the odds of that!

This is a stunning.
I wish I could give you more than one 10.
12/14/2009 05:27:21 AM
I love the gradation on the bottom, it is just beautiful.
Good control on the sun directly in front, and great tones all around.
12/12/2009 07:13:30 PM
The lower half is very nice but the sun's distorted shape is really distracting. 7

Sensational!!!
12/12/2009 05:19:40 AM
The bottom half of this picture is excellent.

The view that the occupants of that far off hot air balloon get to see high above must be spectacular and beautiful. Your photograph certainly is. The fog draws the eye first inward to the balloon then on to the life giving sun and cloud dancing patterns. Great shot.
12/11/2009 01:44:54 PM
Breath taking.
12/10/2009 11:29:58 PM
nice name lol and cool shot.
12/10/2009 11:48:54 AM
Beautiful composition. Given the restrictions of basic editing, the sun spot being a bit hot is hard to complain about. 9
12/10/2009 12:51:44 AM
The clear winner, 10
12/09/2009 10:29:40 PM
what a shot, blue ribbon and I figure this will end up on the top half of 7.5 at least. Good luck, really like those long shadows.
12/09/2009 06:13:08 PM
This has to be the winner....wow!
12/09/2009 04:50:05 PM

12/09/2009 02:47:48 PM
This one hits a lot of the DPC buttons. I think it will do very well indeed.
12/09/2009 02:18:03 PM
Here is a real eye catcher--for me anyway! :) If i could humbly suggest, cropping the sun out would take this to the top. It's still a great photo, I just think the interplahy of shadows, tree tops, and baloon are the stars of the show. In this challenge, leaving the sun in was probably the safest route though. Good luck!
12/09/2009 12:43:57 PM
The lower 2/3's of this image is really lovely. The blown out sun, not so much.
12/09/2009 11:47:22 AM
this is beautiful. keep my fingers cross, this will be in the top 5! good luck!
12/09/2009 05:48:16 AM
Magnificent, should ribbon. In time this shot should rival
12/09/2009 02:15:17 AM
stunning...wish it was bigger 8
