I have been holding off writing anything until I knew whether this image would still be allowed in this challenge or not. I am putting together a series for a competition...and as usual, I wanted to know how this image would fair in a competition style. This is one of 4 images in the series I am doing, all of which are harsh and touch on childhood emotion that all of us can relate to. This one would have to be the harshest. Yes this happens to adults...but it happens to just as many juveniles..and because they are juveniles, many more go unreported..though embarrassment and shame. I spoke long and hard with Kita and this style of image...and she said "Mum, I am fine with it". She knew about this type of situation long before I thought of doing this image. And it timed perfectly with this challenge.

The reason I am standing by my image is it is confrontational. If it brings awareness to this situation....if it helps one female realise she isn't alone...if it makes one male realise that this is the wrong thing to do....if, if, if....it is worth it. The pain, the humiliation, the life sentence for the victim.....it will never go away. I know....!

Wow! Judi. I have just come across this. It is such a powerful image. I think that the inclusion of the man gives us a dual focus which is entirely appropriate. We are appalled at the girl's violation, and seethe with indignation at the man, who has simply turned his back and walked away from his evil act. He will go on with his life as though nothing has happened, while she must cope with something that will never leave her.

Didn't see this previously. Wow. Very disturbing but very powerful. This must have been difficult to pull off for so many reasons (and most of those reasons have nothing to do with photography)

Excellent photo, all the impact you could ever want..

But.. Please, oh please! Get out of that mindset that only females can be victims and only males can be perpetrators..

If it's not too odd to say, "lovely work." I'm not sure this is, as you say, something we can all relate to, though perhaps most of us can at least cringe at the topic. Frankly I thought the blood put this into an extreme realm. Powerful nonetheless.

By the way, I love your color treatment. Good comp, too, and I disagree with those who think the man should be less prominent. I think your chosen DOF is right on.

What a great work, I love it. But agree with ASTONishing that it would be even better with shallower DOF.

I love this image =] And boo to the people who said it was too much. I appreciate you showing the real world, no matter how bad it can be. Photography shouldn't be all lady bugs and flowers, and this is beautiful!!

Thank You for the explanation of your motivation for the shot and for posting it. While the capture is technically great, the "image" is very disturbing. I applaud your sincerity in raising awareness to an ugly slice of real life and wholehearted agree that saving one person is worth all effort. I withdraw my very low vote (thought the image was for "shock" value).

Good Luck with your series !

great shot Judy, the light and processing are fantastic... thinking about it some more, the light is perhaps "too good", I guess there was a reflector there somewhere to smooth the shadows, right?... so it feels a tad too "glamorous" for what you were going after, I would prefer a bit more grit and sharp shadows to increase an impact in this situation

Not only the good story managed for this but also excellent lighting, tone and contrast make this photo outstanding.

This would have been better if the DoF was more shallow. The "man" needs to be fading into the bokeh. He seems out of place as is.

This is "horrible" I cant describe it otherwise. Photographically speaking its good and Your angle is perfect and the story being told here is very strong...but maybe to strong. Especially with the man standing their with back to us. I think the picture will tell the story even without him in the frame. I have to be objective in scoring here and not let my personal impressions/feelings of this overrule the truth of it all. 8

I had to come back and comment on this photo. While I see that the technical aspects are all very well done (the lighting is fantastic), I don't understand it. I think it would have worked much better without the man, who seems to me to be somewhat unnecessary, and not in keeping with the feel of the image. I'm very interested to read your comments after voting.

Very bold take! Great concept but there seems to be a dissonance between the mood in the picture (appears bright and happy) and the subject matter (which I presume is rape). Overall, it's still a great image. 7

I find this to be a disturbing image; which of course drives home the "delicate" theme. Nice job - I think ;-)
