Challenge: Personified Smiles and Frowns (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: Challenges: Macos / Close ups
Camera: Canon EOS-7D
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Location: Chatham, MA
Date: Jan 16, 2010
Aperture: f/13
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/160
Date Uploaded: Jan 17, 2010

Well... I started out shooting much more subtle smile/frown personifications, knowing that these binoculars at lighthouse beach overlook in Chatham were always an option, but thinking that they might be well "just too obvious!". Something similar was already used on one of the American express ads. However, when I got to the lookout on this unusually sunny and clear day and saw the textures on these I couldn't resist. I am intrigued by the circular patch on the left of this one that is slightly different from the remaining area. Was this started out by one person and then turned over to someone else to finish who had a different style, or perhaps it is an area that was repaired at some stage? No matter, just the idle musings of a curious mind!! One great advantage of these is that they are designed to swivel both horizontally and vertically, so you can select the angle you want relative to the light!

My first submission with my new Canon 7D camera and EF-S 18-135 mm lens, and also the first since I changed my username from Penny_weaver!. Converted from RAW to DNG and imported into CS3. Slight skew adjust to correct for barreling effect from lens. Cropped. Some Topaz filtering. There was a small area of glare that I tried to minimize but I can see that the healing brush work I did was inadequate in the area of sky affected. Gradient multiply on all sides. Possibly a color adjustment or levels adjustment, I don't now recall. Reduced and saved for web.

Thanks for the great comments.

Nicely seen - congrats on the top ten! And yes, the dot pattern difference does make you wonder how that happened.

Great capture. Looks like a wide smile. Definitely could have been in the Am-Ex commercial!
