Challenge: Best of 2009 (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Location: Mistaya River, Alberta, Canada
Date: Oct 20, 2009
Aperture: f22
ISO: 100
Shutter: 0.6 seconds
Date Uploaded: Jan 20, 2010

This was taken in the Canadian Rockies during a Darwin Wiggett photography tour. It was stormy practically every day were were there (8 days) but a lot of the images were just stunning with the clouds and fog.
Levels, curves, cloned out a photographer to right below me, cropped. It was necessary for me to use a polarizer to cut haze, graduated ND 0.6 also was used.

more editing details: I used a multiply blend layer to darken sky and mountain; then layer mask to reveal the lighter foreground
pseudo hdr (dynamicphoto) used lightly for saturation
lucis art exposure used very lightly for detail in trees

I really like this - the detail in the rocks and the trees but mostly the blue in the water nicely done!

Wow. Would love to see the original of this. feel its maybe worked a bit to much especially the trees. Super comp and mood here though. Still a 8 from me. Would really appreciate if you were to give some feedback as to your processing here.

I like how you've captured so many picturesque elements of landscapes in one scene. The river, the peaks, the dynamic clouds and the evergreen forest all combine together quite nicely. Looks like a tiny bit of the mountain and the river a slightly blown but it's a minor issue. Good job.

Well done! You've created a beautiful image. I like the way you've managed to create contrast in the pines--not an easy feat.

9 - What a pleasure to look at, and I like the drama that the processing has brought out in the scene.

I gave this a 9, the trees and rocky river is great but it's the clouds and especially the mountain that really put it over the top for me

Excellent composition and very nice use of processing to bring out detail, subtleties. Something I'm sure would look quite lovely printed and framed!

I'm going to assume that this has been enhanced in some manner, but your application of whatever technique you chose is done extrememly well resulting in a delightful scene, both wild and beautiful.....9

Sweet! Love the s-curve in the creek, and the two layers of clouds. But the clouds do reduce the separation of the mountain. 7

When I see shots like this I often wonder how long you had to walk to get to it. This one feels pretty isolated though for all I know you could be standing at the edge of the car park :)

I like this, I like the fact that you have nice details running all the way through it, from the rocks in the foreground right through to the mountain in the background. The stream for me is a touch overdone, I usually prefer water to look like water rather than flowing smoke.

Just a touch too much HDR, the trees look a bit weird. Otherwise very very nice, great ominous cloud over the mountain.
01/22/2010 04:30:42 PM
Looks like a little HDR went into this, and if that is the case, I like that the effect is subtle. Great shot.

This is without a doubt a truly gorgeous shot!It is truly a shame one cannot just jump into the picture like they do in the Mary Poppins film of this would be a wonderful place to explore. Composition and lighting and detailed DOF are just stunning. Love how the flowing river is in the center and acts as a curving road that the eye travels upon to arrive at the majestic mountain beyond the canopy of pines.
