Thanks very much all! I had a lot of fun getting this capture, so for it to do well in the challenge too was just icing on the cake.

*For those wondering: this tunnel is on the east slope of Queen Anne Hill and feeds southbound Aurora Ave. into Dexter Ave.

Ahhh, thanks a bunch! I've been through there a few times.

Lol! I can't say I did that much math when I captured this DC ;-) I just played with the settings until the smear seemed about right with the trickiest part being to release the shutter at the right time. The car was actually about to head into a curve so I think you're close with your estimated speed but maybe 5-10 mph too high.
Thanks, and you can be a math geek under my shots anytime!

At first I thought the car had to be blazing through that tunnel to get that much motion blur in 1/3 second. After estimating distance and doing some math I calculated that the car was going just over 40 mph. Still maybe a bit fast going through a tunnel.

From my perspective I estimated about 20 foot of motion blur in the frame. At 1/3 sec shutter that would be 60 feet in 1 sec and 3600 feet in one minute. I multiplied that by 60 to get the distance in feet covered in one hour at that estimated speed and then did a feet to miles conversion.

1/3 that 20 feet = 60 feet per second
60 feet per second x 60 = 3600 feet per second
3600 x 60 minutes = 216,000 feet in one hour
216000 / 5280 (number of feet in statue mile) = 40.91 MPH

Don't mind me I'm a math geek as well and it's fun! LOL. So is that the speed limit through the tunnel...40 MPH?

BTW, the photo is fantastic and added as a favorite. Congrats on your Blue!

This is such a cool shot! Love the tunnel and the blurred car is such a great touch. Congrats on the blue! (Dallas had a tunnel like this full of graffati and old hanging bulbs and they tore it down!!!)

How cool is THAT! It looks like it may have been a little scary getting this one. The camera looks awfully close to that zooming car. And it turned out so good! Congratulations on 1st place for your efforts :)
