OMG OMG OMG...am I being punk'd?!

I could hardly believe that this fairly simple shot of a plane might bring me a ribbon, let alone a blue!

Thanks to Magnumphotography, for taking me to this location with you as you tried to capture that incredibly tricky shot! Love you Ryan!

We were at the end of a runway, on the public side of the barrier, by the rack of lights used to help guide in the planes. It was about 8:30 am when we got there on a pretty cold and windy morning. Once we could see a plane in the distance as a tiny speck, we'd have the time to get out of the car, cross the road get set up. I decided to put the D90's 4.5 fps to work, and that coupled with panning the Sigma, helped me capture this.

Huge thanks too to Team Suck, whose members have offered nothing but tons of support in all forms, humour, and friendly camraderie. Never fear, I STILL have an average under 5!

Oh and the green circle? Lens flare, to the best of my knowledge, as I don't have a lenshood for the Sigma. But I will soon!

PS: Nope, we weren't wearing earplugs. You don't hear the afterburners until the plane is about 5 seconds away, behind you, then it goes screaming overhead.

PPS: Nope, did not *assume the position* for which I am best known. Though I believe I tried a few shots from that angle, but found it too cold. I may have been hunkered down, though, so that's pretty close :-)

PPS: Ryan's right...I was staring at the top row of images for Things that Count, and Perspective VI was the second row, he did literally point out the shot to me :-)

Thanks everyone for all the great comments!

Holy Cow!!! Snaffles what an amazing shot. I've never seen a jet from this perspective before. Congrats on your Blue. ----I've decided to go through all my comments and look at their profiles. This might take a few weeks as I'm writing Exams and report cards right now. I want to get to know this community better, and thank everyone personally. You're at the top of my comments, so I'll start with you. I have been living in Taiwan since 1996 and have only returned home once in all that time. Out of touch with planet Earth. Take Care, bye for now.

Susan, this is just marvelous! Congrats on your blue, your PB, and just in general the way your photography has come alive these days. An image of impressive impact, creative and well shot, and it's no surprise to me that when you did get your first ribbon, that it'd be in this astonishing way. Keep on keepin' on, girl! W00t!

Woohoo! Congrats on an unusual angle and a great shot, your personal best, your first ribbon, and your first blue all in one! :)

About that angle - it's SO much more interesting than if the plane's nose were toward the top of the shot.

BTW, I love that lens. It lives on my camera.

Congrats again!

Wonderful shot, I love it. Well done!

As per Bear_Music's comment regarding the absence of afterburners on commercial aircraft, I would like to also offer that the engines are near idle or just above it on final approach. So, the noise is subdued and highly attenuated compared to a departure shot of the same plane with the engines spooled up to maximum thrust. Sorry, the pilot in me makes me say these things.

As it happens, I am off to CYOW tomorrow myself.

Congratulations on the blue ribbon!!! This is such a cool shot! I like the shiny belly of the plane!

I took a shot like this last year at Frankfurt airport - but with a fisheye which made the plane look so far away that all that roar that you should feel, looking at it, disappeared.

Your photo still has this feel of airplane sound, and the interesting tilt really makes this look like an acrobatic maneuver :)

Greetings from the Critique Club.

First impressions are that this is an impressive shot that makes the plane look like it is upside down!?

Technically this is good. Composed well. Exposed well - you haven't killed it with post processing. I do find the skin of the plane to look a little glossy - maybe we don't clean our planes in NZ as much as you guys ;) There seems to be some noise visible in the engines - is this from some shadow/hilight processing perhaps or a topaz filter? The crop works well for the shot. The green circle is a bit of a shame but it seems you are off to address that :)

Artistically this has a "wow" factor that DPC likes but you know this because you won the blue with it. The sky is a bit full of clouds for my liking but that's a minor nitpick.

In summary a good shot for the challenge as the voters have already told you. The funny thing is that in a Free Study I'm not sure this would score much above a 6, it's just that it fits the challenge well so in context it rocks.

Feel free to PM me if you have any queries.
Gerry
