Challenge: In the Garden II (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-7D
Lens: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro
Location: In my garden :)
Date: Feb 24, 2010
Aperture: f/5
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/125
Galleries: Nature, Macro

This time of year the cicada's are everywhere around home. The green ones have only recently hatched so tend to stay still when you poke a lens in front of them. After an hour or so they "dry off" and start to turn brown and they fly away far too easily.

I love this macro lens but don't put it on enough!

Are you voters taking the p*ss? The challenge says "compose a photograph somehow related to the garden" and this cicada is somehow related to the garden - they sit in the freaking thing all day long. Sometimes I do wonder how I can be so far out of sync with the voters - I really didn't think this shot was going be sitting at 5.3 after 100 votes :(

Greetings from the Critique Club

First Impressions:

Is that it is another macro bug shot.

Technical (Comp, lighting, color, focus, Processing):

Great job filling the frame with the subject and I think your composition is spot on. Lighting seems well done as well and the colors are rich and natural. I think your focus is very well done, super sharp and detailed in parts and smoothly blurred in others.

Challenge:

I think this met the challenge well, not sure what some of the voters were thinking when they couldn’t see the connection. Maybe if the bug was sitting on a recognizable object (tomato or something) then they could have made the connection better.

Artistic/Emotion:

N/A

Summary:

I think this is an excellent macro shot that, in my opinion, should have finished around a 6. I don’t think it was anything technical that hurt this shot but was rather a combination of voters not making the connection to the garden and voters who just don’t care for macro bug shots.

Great macro/close up. Cicada's are alien looking bugs. Nice colours and your PP is good but not overdone. Great BG.

Great closeup. Wish for more setting for a "garden" photo.

I fail to see the connection to the garden, but it's an amazing shot nonetheless.

Nice capture of the eyes, but shame on the blurred wings.
