Challenge: Shadows VI (Basic Editing)
Collection: Challenge Stuff
Camera: Canon EOS-450D Rebel XSi
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Location: University of Houston, Houston Texas
Date: Mar 9, 2010
Aperture: F6.7
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 1/15
Date Uploaded: Mar 9, 2010

This is a piece of artwork outside the library at the University of Houston. During the day it is blah but at night the light in the center comes on to show the real intent of the design.

Balanced on a pole for the shot (did not have my tripod with me), forgot I had my camera set at 1600 ISO from shooting an indoor event at Chili's. Not much in the way of post. Converted to black and white with a green filter, noise reduction, levels, and straighten (all in Aperture). Had a real hard time with straightening the photo and still don't think it is perfect. Was to lazy (and it was almost time for submission to close) to take it into photoshop to straighten it.

Going back with my tripod to photograph it again for an HDR version and have some ideas for the Night Shot challenge if the sky will show some stars tonight.

Wow, thanks everyone for the votes and comments. This is a personal best and my first ribbon.

Hi Ronnie, greetings from the Critique Club!

Well, nothing much to say about this one, super congrats on your personal best and ribbon!
Stunning shot, and yes, it's straight :) I used the word "Romance" as a reference, and it's not crooked.

Great choice on the b&w, great composition on not centering the subject, good balance between highlights and shadows. And 1/15s handheld?? Great job!

If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
Regards,
Joao

Such a striking image. I really enjoy the way the light is rippling outward, in a circular fashion. Congratulations on the ribbon.
