Socorro Town Center, Late April Afternoon.

When I look at this image, I first notice the patch of light still on the building, then I travel down the road to the central street of Socorro, towards the bright and warm light of the Cabradas across the river.

That's when I look up and see the clock, ahh, the clock, now's that's why we're here isn't it? I cannot help but think about this image in context of time, and what it means.

There's so much time in this photo, the fleetingly short time that is represented by the patch of remaining light, the clouds, always moving, and the half-day represented on a clock face.

I don't see the time references stopping there, oh no. When we look at the nearly everything in the shot we see time at work, in the buildings we see years of wear, the road shows wear, as does the desk outside the closed barber shop. When you look down the street, if you look carefully, you will see an old building just behind the clock's pole, that's a fascinating building I'm sure you'll see in another challenge, it has a huge tobacco ad on the side, which is wonderfully worn, and a true throwback to a different era.. Notice the Mason's symbol? There's something you don't see on new buildings very often, even the bicycle outside the bicycle shop looks fairly worn.

The only object in this photo not showing wear is the clock and it's central concrete divider, I suppose I wonder what that means, maybe it's just that we take care of time better than everything else, or just that we're more concerned with time.. Who knows, but I found this to be my favorite image of this month, and thought that I should share it with everyone..

Now, let's see how my work is seen by DPC, I do suppose it has the eye-candy, although hard-core HDR haters will probably give me some grief over my processing choice here. In any case, I really just want to share this, bedamn the score. :)

History:

On the corner of Plaza and Manzanares Ave. is the Abeytia Block. The two story brick building was built in 1880. It housed the Hilton Drugstore and the Masonic Lodge. The drugstore was founded in the late 1890’s by a relative of Conrad Hilton, and is known as having been the oldest operating drugstore in the state. In the 1930’s, the building was remodeled with a California Mission Revival style, and the first floor lost its arched windows. The drugstore corner is now the Socorro County Chamber of Commerce.

I think this is a great use of HDR. I really like the abandoned feel of a town square with the lighting very low key. I think that's what keeps away from a traditional HDR shot, and people should have appreciated more for this reason.

Quite beautiful. Ordinary town/businesses turned into art. The textures are beautiful and the use of shadows adds mystery.

Nice going! Just goes to show that it pays to enter what you like and not try to chase popular appeal. Over time just doing what you prefer will improve. Nice description. And I thought I was long winded with my descriptions!

I love the write-up you added to this. Quite liked the shot as well (gave it an 8 - HDR haters be damned!) and I really like the story that goes with it. Nicely done!

The emptiness of the streets and sidewalks is really quite striking.
