...it's the sudden stop at the end.

Decided to play around with high-speed photography techniques with my flashes. I aimed the camera at the floor in the shower with a 10 second exposure at f/10 in the dark. I released the shutter, then dropped the balloon with one hand and with the other triggered my flashes right when it hit the floor.

I took about 100 shots and this was the best composition / effect. I find this kind of thing fascinating - we'll see what the voters think!

There are about 4-5 really different looking stages of the impact - here are some of the other shots:

Selective editing includes contrast, saturation, dodge/burn, noise reduction, sharpening, cloning out small specs, and vignetting.

Hey, thanks for the comments, folks - just noticed them.

Yes, these are water balloons dropped onto a tile floor using flashes to freeze the motion. They're really pretty tough if you don't overfill them - I only had one break on accident. The "vomiting pacman" was on purpose - if you look closely you can see the pin on the floor. The only thing I varied over the other shots was exactly when the flash trigger went off during the impact.

Thanks for the suggestions, Joe. =)

UN REAL.. amazing. I would do a whole series like this if I had the ability to shoot them. Wow!! Did you use water in them and were they varied?

In your outtakes, the one in the lower left looks like a vomiting PacMan. :-) (And a couple look like dog droppings!)

I did think this was quite fascinating when I voted the challenge!

I thought this was sweet. A great stop action image. I think to take it to the next level would be to incorporate more elements, like a target or maybe toss it at someone's face. :P

This is definitely underrated. I don't think people realized what they were looking at. What a clever idea.
