Dempsey G: USA Natl Team(U14) and all around good kid.

I've had this shoot rattling around in my head for about 6 months. His USA helmet is very cool and I thought some strobed action shots would be fun. Thanks for the votes and comments. Here are some others from the series.

They came out better than I hoped but I learned some things and can't wait to shoot this style again. 3 flashes: 1 in Cheetbox behind subject right, unmodified flash behind subject left, background wash with third flash(not in all shots). Cybersyncs. Inspired by //www.giardinophoto.com/

p.s. I understand the staged vs. natural sports action debate. I'm sympathetic but in the context of this challenge, i don't agree with it.

I love the photo - the lighting is excellent and the shallow dof really bring the subject out. Great job, as usual!

Amazing lighting. How did you do it? Also that Giardino guy's work is really inspiring.

Wow! This is a FABULOUS photo! Can you imagine a senior baseball player getting a photo like this for his senior pictures? I know if my baseball player had been able to get a senior photo like this back in the day, it would be an enormous gallery print in our game room. Congratulations on the ribbon, and I agree with you about it being just perfect for this challenge!

Congrats on the ribbon. You've got some other excellent shots in there for the outtakes, too. I'm really liking 3424-3web and 3431 as well. All awesome shots.

Awesome Mark, huge congrats! I only briefly followed the debate, and I agree, the challenge was simply to capture the action of any sport. You did it supremely well and the majority of voters recognised that.

Magnificent lighting Mark. I really love this shot, it might be staged but it captures the motion and feel of the sport perfectly.

Really good shot. Got a 9 from me and I was hoping the "staged shot" trolls wouldn't shoot it down. Nice work, Mark!

Top capture and well lit. Although the blown out right thigh detracts a little the choice of background makes up for it. One of the best in this challenge.

I love the lighting and composition of this shot, the fence is a little hard to look at, but still great.

I was a catcher, so this certainly appeals to me. Even if I hadn't been, this is an excellent shot.

This is such a great photograph. Only grip is the blown highlights on the leg. Even with that it is one of my two top picks for the challenge.

this looks like a sports action photo, but it has a serious studio-like feel to it.

Good play of lighting with the subject. I love the slight unsaturation. It would have been a 10-pointer if the ball was in focus more than the subject. Good job! 8/10.

I like this shot a lot - I would have loved it if it were not a staged shot with flash. Still a nice job; however, in this challenge I am voting those that had no control over light higher than those that created action in a controlled environment as I believe that was part of the 'challenge'.

Very nice shot! For some reason the motion on the ball seems to take away from the photo some but still one of my favs.
