Challenge: Hidden Gem: Break Time (Advanced Editing VII*)

Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 400

Could have posted another aurora borealis nightscape shot that would probably score much better than this but I personally like this shot better, its one of my favorite so far this year and something different than what I usually do.

This is Jana, who is about 6-7 months pregnant at the time we shot this. We went out to Seljavallaug to take some maternity shots, mainly above water with my regular camera but since I recently aquired a Canon G11 with a waterproof casing I had to try it out. This was the first time I shot with it besides taking shots of my kids having fun swimming. I thought posing in a fetal position was fitting since she is pregnant. I thought about removing the reflection and actually tried it but the shot just looks so much more uninteresting that way.

The swimming pool is filled with natural water and growth so it is very murky as you can see, wich I like, I think the floating dirt/algae adds to the atmosphere of this picture but I am sure Ill get a few comments regarding that. I pretty much shot it blind since I usually have to use glasses on a day to day basis, I couldnt see a thing underwater, the next time I made sure I had swim goggles.

Ambient light only.

Well this certainly did HEAPS better than I thought, I guessed I would be lucky to barely score a six so I was pleasantly surprised. Not that I think the shot doesnt deserve it, I love it, just that I think its a shot you need more than two seconds to take in, wich is probably what I spend on average viewing images here at DPC when I vote myself.

Thx for the score but mostly the comments and favorites!

This is absolutely incredible! I am about to take up some underwater photography with a really old underwater film camera I have. This is so inspiring!

Wow. I had to stop and think about this one for awhile. Isn't that the definition of art?

it's the dirt that took it over the top for me. There's hope for you yet.

DPC surprises me when pictures like these don't get the position they deserve! This is the second shot in the challenge that should have been much higher!

Ótrúlega töff mynd og ljómandi góður árangur að vera á topp 18...tala nú ekki um í rúmlega 500 mynda keppni:-)

This was one of my few 9s. 6.6x is hardly bad, but I do think it should have scored higher than 18th. You're right, it does take more than two seconds to really appreciate this picture, but it doesn't take long at all just to notice that it's something very different.

I'm actually surprised this didn't do better. Poignant, beautiful, refreshing, and obviously a huge effort.

I still think this is the best of the bunch. It is so moving and mysterious. I just want to stare at it for hours.

This was one of the 10s I gave - I absolutely fell in love with it on first viewing, and it continues to grow on me! Thank you for posting the notes - it seems so appropriate that the girl is pregnant, even though you can't tell from the photo.

I really like that you can't see any part of the pool, it really makes the shot for me :) and I was wondering whether I would recognise your entry... Áfram Ísland!

Nice! I'd personally prefer it without the reflection at the top, though.

I'm half way through voting and this is the only shot so far I would put on my wall. Well done 10!

really nice shot. I like how the colour of the water and the reflection you have do. Not 100% certain about the pose reflecting at peace, the muted colours help the message, but she looks tense as she is grabbing her knees.
