Challenge: Free Study 2010-06 (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-500D Rebel T1i
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Location: Cannon Beach, Overcast, Sun Not in View,
Date: Jun 10, 2010
Aperture: f / 4.5
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/500 sec
Galleries: Animals, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Jun 12, 2010

This was shot on Cannon Beach around early afternoon. Cannon beach is home of the infamous "Haystack Rock" and gets tons of tourism out of Portland.

This effect was accomplished through a red contrast filter, low aperture, and a relatively fast shutter speed. B&W mode on my camera gives a nice contrasting effect. Editing includes USM to bring out the dog a bit more, and curves.

I gave this a 7. Usually I give Cannon Beach a 2. Good work.

Luscious and sumptuous black and white. So much light, so much scene.

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: A lovely, lovely image - one that is more than the sum of its parts. The composition and how it so well served by the high depth of field; the wonderful tones, the way you have captured the light; the high key processing and the central charm of the dog.

Critical stuff: Nothing really - I have a worry about the border, but nothing that I need to go into here.

Overall: A brilliant image.

Extra pointage for the most original pic I have seen of Haystack Rock.

cool use of high contrast to emphasize the people and blow out the water. I'll be honest with you, I am not a fan of the frame - cutting the guy off on the left side really distracts me a lot.

Ok, I think I wee where you were going here. The high key with extreme contrast gives the feeling that the dog is walking on glass. But maybe it would have worked better if just that was done, without the distracting elements of the background (especially the people).
