I wanted to do something from someone in the Madison area. Upon doing a few searches, I realized by selection was small, but I did like this simple yet interesting photo captured by John Rummel.

Some key differences: I didn't have a clear pin. I was in the shade, so didn't have as much shadow happening, I didn't like the amount of noise, so I reduced that, and my deck wood is a bit grainier.

This was taken with a 23mm extension tube, so even though it's at a small f-stop, the depth of field is tiny.

In post, I cropped, increased sharpness, reduced noise, increased shadows while also increasing mid contrast, adjusted levels, desaturated and reduced brightness of yellow, converted to black and white (R 30%, G 59%, B 11%), and dodged the stem a bit. This was all done in Aperture (first photo I have edited in Aperture).

Here is the inspiration:

Nice take on the original - great detail and dof.

I like this better than the original, the ground texture is more interesting, and the subject is a lot sharper (nice depth of field).
