Challenge: Negative Image III (Basic Editing)
Camera: Olympus E-520
Date: Sep 26, 2010

I wanted a negative image that didn't instantly look negative. For this, I used a homemade lens that I've been experimenting with. It's made of cardboard, plastic and duct tape. It creates blurry, minimal images and gave me just the effect I wanted.

Looks like this might brown. I really don't care. I'll take great comments over a great score any day. And a negative brown has to be something positive, right?

Really a great photograph. I love the composition, blurriness, and of course, the headlights. May be the first brown I am adding as a favorite.

Just seeing your Negative Image entry Brian. I think that it's wonderful the way you envisioned and produced this image. I agree with PennyStret, negative of brown is blue!

what a great shot Brian! congrats!

by the way, it's almost a negative of this

which incidentally also captured PH-red... isn't that interesting?

Another great brown! I could not bring myself to vote on Negative Image, nor even to look. But now that I have done so, I have obviously started at the right end! Brilliant suspension of all that's tedious about photography, in favor of all that's bewitching. Thank you Brian. I can see I must pull my socks up (down) if I am to keep up with you down here in the DPC dirt.

ETA: I think I may have your measure in Monuments and Memorials however. Stand by.

I had this as one of my favorites. Congratulations on the posthumous ribbon. It is even better knowing you took it with a homemade lens. This should be hanging on a gallery wall.

Guess I overlooked leaving a comment when voting. I liked this and gave it a 7. Awesome that you got the Posthumous Red. :)

So misunderstood. So very underappreciated. Well, by most. Congrats on all your ribbons. I also thought they looked like eyelashes :-)

Love the way the negative headlights look like great eyelashes. Such a foggy feel. The curves and simplicity are very appealing. And BTW, I think it's really cool that you made your own lens.

Yeah, this is great. The lights have an intriguing depth that is, at first, definitely a surprise. Like jets, but then you recognize the road. Well done Brian, congrats on the Brown and Red!!

I thought this might be yours as the scenario would play out best with a cardboard lens. One of the best in the challenge, IMO.
OMG (just realized) it's the brown!!!! the negative of brown is blue!!!
You got a ribbon. he he he.

Back to comment and bump: This is a very interesting concept and I think you did a good job with the execution. However, the image lacks depth, as the fading of the road into the night doesn't translate as well when converted to a negative. I also imaging that you are getting a lot of comments about the noise/grain. I like it but I'm sure it is hurting your score.

AAAKGTHSPLGGG!! My head just exploded with the wonderfulness of this image.

[gets up and jumps around].

Marvelous. Just magical and minimalist, and blurred, and all the things I adore in an image. My fave of the challenge so far. For what it's worth...
