Here is Wisconsin, we have quite a few wild turkeys. To my surprise, they run all over the city of Madison as well! I have seen quite a few in the UW Arboretum in the past, and have recently learned that you can get pretty close to them (they are fairly used to human activity), but are not tame by any means (apparently they can become quite aggressive if provoked).
Two days before this challenge was announced, I was shooting foliage in the Arboretum when I came across one of these guys and snapped a few photos. Naturally, I then spent the entire week after the announcement trying to find them again. Finally on Saturday morning, I found the entire flock. It was pretty early in the morning, and cloudy, so the light was pretty dim for my lens (a L series lens would have been do handy), so I bumped the ISO up a bit, and shot away. Came back with a number of crap shots (these things don't stop moving for a second!), and this one, which I very much enjoy.
I'm not sure how it will do in voting, but the combination of sharpness, details, colors, and composition will hopefully prove successful.
Post Processing:
* Import into Aperture - noise reduction applied
* Apply Highlights, Shadows, and Recovery adjustments
* Topaz detail to mainly bring out the big details and reduce the boost details. Also modified the tone sliders to bring out the turkey against the background.
* Topaz adjust to even out the exposure and bring out the falls colors of the background. Also adjusted the details a bit and applied some noise reduction.
* Back in Aperture:
** Crop
** Increase Exposure, Recovery, Black Point, and Brightness
** Increase Definition
** Increase Saturation with lower Vibrancy
** Curves
** Shadows
** Edge Sharpen just the bird
** Dodge the eye
** Clone out a piece of grass in the mouth
** Blur the background to return some of the Depth of Field lost by Topaz Detail
** Export to 800px
* Add border and save for Web in Graphic Converter |
