i'm rusty

--

Post: wow, I guess I should be rusty more often. It seemed to work out this time. I'm stoked to get my second ribbon, and this time, it didn't even take a DQ from someone else to bump me up!

I guess I should also name everything some kind of "aperitif," since it seems to work for me...

I got a question about the lighting--there were three lights. Two clip-on lamps for the background; one in the lower left and one in the upper right. Then a small hand-held flashlight to spotlight the orange. (It was this maneuver that led to the appearance of my face in the corner of the martini glass.)

Here's a look at the setup, from which you can see the importance of coke cans in keeping everything together (this was also after I tried coloring the water green, which was just a bad idea):

A brief comment on the border: my first instinct was to put the border on, although I made a second version without it and would have submitted it if I weren't half a second past deadline at that point. My thinking was that the orange and glass needed more space from the edge of the frame, which wasn't possible with the crop I had to make. The whole thing was a bit of a rush job, starting two hours before rollover...

Anyhow, thanks for all the votes and comments! All the constructive criticism is entirely appreciated and most welcome, and I agree, there are ways I could have improved on this.

I like this shot...except for your face in it. I feel like it doesn't belong.

This is such a beautiful photo. Love the composition, the detail and soft background. I would have given it the highest mark, if it weren't for the thick border. This image would do well with thin border. 9

Would be better if the orange rind was a bit of a fuller orange. Cool concept though.

Overall, a nice photo. Some things that could have brought the score up a bit: the depth of field is very shallow, I would like to see the details in the orange better. Also, the blown highlights on the orange are somewhat distracting.

This is a tricky shot. Very well done. I think if the orange really "popped" in the shot that would make it a 10.

well composed; orange is a tad dark; border seems overdone; bit of a strange reflection /refraction at the bottom right of glass - is that your face?

border so over the top that it knocks a certain 10 to a 7. why? gl

This is a real standout, and one of my picks for the top 3. Intrigued by what looks like a face reflected in the bottom right of the glass.

Great image, nice balance and lighting. Is that sort of border legal in basic though? If so, you'll have to teach me how to do it... looks really good!
