Unfortunately I'm not well-off enough to afford a decent studio to shoot this picture in, but we did our best with what we had! I have seen many pictures of ladies painted in paint only and it looks sensational! I thought this may be something different.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback - it was very frustrating trying to get the lighting right for this without the right equipment. I know the harsh highlights is what bought the score down. I tried using my little video studio light, flash and a 60 watt globe as a fill light, but in the end just used the 60 watt globe! Plus the dilema with the chocolate - I now know the difference between eating chocolate and cooking chocolate!! Eating chocolate doesn't melt!!

By the way the model happens to be my beautiful wife who was more than happy to pose for this shot. For those who wanted to know, unfortunately by the end (it was 1:30am) we were both so tired she just jumped in the shower and I packed up. Bit of a rip I know! :P

Good idea Philip, and good to see you back again. One question. How did you get the chocolate off afterwards :)

All I can say is YUM!! OK...the chocolate has a little reddish tint to it. The skin tones and shadows are awesome though, especially by the right (left in pic) clavicular area.

Great idea! The light is a bit harsh and the orange tinge is a bit too strong, but the image still works.

I really like the the way the chocolate compliments the color of the skin. The only suggestion I would meke would be to have one breast much less obvious than the other, and then to have the chocolate swirl start at the obivous one and then to go the the less obvious one. And then have one of her fingers dipped in chocolate tracing along her belly. That way the obsever looks at the obvious breast, then follows the swirlt to the next and then to the finger and back to the first breast. Better yet, leave the photo alone, this is yours, not mine. Now I just have to find a model and some chocolate syrup. ;)

So far, this is the first body chocolate shot I've come across, and I really thought this contest would be saturated with them. Surprisingly, this is artistically done. I really think it's very sensual.

Interesting composition.
07/26/2004 05:11:50 PM
One of my favorites from the competition, and not just because of the subject matter. The lighting is warm and soft which adds a nice look to the skin and creates a nice contrast to the dark and shiny chocolate. I also like the composition because of how the chocolate starts on the top right and works it way down into the frame. The only improvement might be to reduce the hightlights in the chocolate. I think you could maintain the shiny look without letting it go all the way white. Definitely one of the more creative of the challenge!

Creative. The chocolate is perfectly applied. Beautiful model. Good lighting, though a bit flat on her left breast and the belly below it.

That pic needs a lot of work.

The squirls are very artistic, the composition isnt bad, the lighting is ok although some of the light reflection spots are a little distracting. The idea is a good one.

Good use of chocolate as body paint. You have my 7.
07/23/2004 04:38:08 PM
I really like the contrasts of shape, shade and lighting and skin tones on this. It looks a 'warm' image. I like the way the chocolate has been used so creatively in the photo. I'm not a photo expert and neither am I qualified to make any technical criticisms, but for me this photograph works really well and I gave it a 9

A naked body and chocolate is bound to be a ribbon winner. Pretty cool effect...I especially like that you did a design rather than just smearing it on. The angle and lighting is also good. Overall, it really doesn't do too much for me, but I think it will score well.

Wow. Very nice shot. I like how the light reflects off of the uh.. the uhm.. the body chocolate. It really makes the areas with the reflection... um... stick out.

Great choice of lighting on this one. This is definatley something one would see as the cover of a magazine or 'hot' novel or a poster in an adult oriented shop of some sort... Perhaps it would work as a poster in a posh chocalate shop...

I really like the use of chocolate in your picture, everything is in focus also. I think the light on the chocolate gives some distraction to the picture. But I like it a lot.

Great picture! I like the design that you painted. I think it would have greater impact in landscape so it looks more like she is laying down and not standing up. I think that this should get a ribbon. Good luck!

That's body painting with a difference. Beautifully painted - and excellent composition. Nice choice to focus on body and shapes rather than include face. Lighting just a touch TOO orange for my tastes.

Sensational! I was planning a body shot but never managed to get my act together in time for the challenge. Absolutely love the lighting, the angle you have the model at, the crop, everything. Also the nicest shaped model I have seen in quite a while, she is perfect. Great stuff, definitely my pick of the challenge! 10

Nicely lit. Good concept. Composition seems a little off-balance with the large black area at bottom right. Maybe crop it at the collar bone?
