My good buddy justamistere
let me use his lens with a 2x doubler …
So this is effectively 320mm.

It was an amazing experience - being on the edge of an icy pier where we could have easily been killed had we slipped or been pushed off ;)

Side thought: He'll probably be so pissed if this does well. =)

[Dec. 29th, 2010 04:38:11 PM]

Traditionally, this is a fun week since work is limited and we have NewYEar's eve to look forward to … but now I have a 7.55 in this challenge so it gives me something extra fun to keep checking all week =) …

[Dec. 30th, 2010 01:58:03 PM]

So I'm looking at an awesome score and thinking "I'm glad I did this photo shoot … but how?" …
Well I had a huge scratch in my cornea which kept me off of work for 3 days. This was the day before I was going to go back to work and look at computer screens again. I decided to give it a shot - heck you really only need one eye to use a camera anyway =)

Anyway, I suppose without the scratched cornea, I may have never had this opportunity.

BTW: same subject at around 10mm:

I also need to thank Bear_Music, paulbtlw, colorcarnival, and Yo_Spiff and my wife for feedback regarding the image. I wasn't sure if this was even the correct challenge to enter =)

Beautiful shot. Amazingly sharp!

I wanted to get out to the Lake and take a shot as well. But...you know what they say about those that hesitate.

Simply a phenomenal picture. When I originally voted on this, I skimmed through the thumbnail, not really appreciating how great this picture is. At full size, the details are outstanding -- probably would've given you +2 on my original vote. Glad you took blue though!

Vignetting really adds a gloomy sense to the picture..in a good way. Lovely!

Not for the first time, Tate, I must agree with Strikeslip!

this is a fabulous image and one you can use for 'basking in glory' anytime you wish.

I hope you eyesight is completely restored now and that you will be up for DPL, Act III when that curtain rises.

This is absolutely amazing! It almost doesn't look like a real lighthouse - it almost takes on the aspect of a chilly layered cake with killer ICI(ng)CLES :-) The ice and icicles are just amazing to see coated on this lighthouse - glad you were able to capture some seagulls in the shot for it greatly complements this winter seascape shot. Congrats on the blue!

Congratulations on the BLUE ribbon. I got a few interesting Stills and Video clips during our shoot time. I haven't entered any contests, yet, trying to copyright, then sell them. It's now a necessity for me. "Mister E Photography".

I'm not sorry I invited you for this photoshoot even with your hurt eye. He got poked in the eye by a tree, just about 2 days before.

Tate was responsible for keeping lit a string of 42 lights stretching over 65 miles of waterway. In addition, William was also responsible for maintaining his Keepers Quarters. During his years of service, William J. Tate was cited frequently in the Report of the Commissioner of Lighthouses for saving lives and property, which is no small feat. In fact, he is cited so often that Coast Guard Historian Dr. Robert Browning remarked, "it is truly amazing that any one man would be cited so many times."

What in the world? It almost looks like a Christmas piece for a arctic train set. I think I see an iced Santa with a hat on in the center and a walrus at the top. Cool pic.

This must be the most famous lighthouse in the world right now! Your choice of split tone is a good one - works well, as does the inclusion of the seagulls. A bit of noise reduction in the sky only might be worth considering - and a little less sharpening.

Awesome. I saw this on the BBC last week and knew someone would be in Michigan with a great photo op. But I never knew it'd be this good. Excellent capture. A ribbon's headed your way, deservedly.

Ahhh, right. I was thinking it was the Michigan lighthouse but it's Lake Erie near Cleveland. Regardless, it's a stunner.

edit: I'm back to make this a favorite. The gulls stopped in motion put it over the top it was already over. Should be blue.

What the heck???!!! Does not look real. Phenomenal. And I can't tell if you desaturated this but the tones are perfect. There is real magic in this image, and the birds and like feathered pixie dust. Front page. And a ribbon.

I usually appreciate a vignette, but in my humble opinion this subject is big and bold and doesnt need help to keep me enthralled with every aspect of it. I gave you a 10 anyway because this is great and you must have suffered for this art! Brrrrr! Good luck!
