Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Out of Balance (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D Mark II
Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Date: Jan 9, 2011
Aperture: f/22
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/200 sec
Date Uploaded: Jan 9, 2011

Thanks all, I'm very glad of this finish :-)

As the title suggests, the photo obviously tries to give a fantasist explanation for Magritte's work genesis, hence the hat and the apple.

I tried to propose different levels of "out-of-balance-ness":
- gravitationally: the woman is not in a very stable position
- visually: the big head silhouette is close and dark while the main subject is far and bright, putting the emphasis on the apple.

Lighting setup:
- Softbox from the upper left
- Silver umbrella from the right as fill
- Backlight (the strobe was fixed to the ceiling, pointing behind the subject)

_______________________________

I'm quite surprised about the DQ, since I've been using the very same studio background technique for the last 6 months. I think 6 or 7 entries using the very same technique have even been validated by the SC: I had no clue I was on the rules' edge.

That being said, I can live with that, and I will come up with a new way of achieving the results I want in my next shots.

Thanks all for your kind support comments :-)

sorry about your DQ, too, Christophe! As much as I like to be in the front page, I feel bad that it is at the expense of losing your great image.

I am so sorry for your DQ Christophe. I hope there is some mistake that can be rectified with the site council. This is a great image.

If only I had 1/10 of your imagination! How incredibly striking. I love that the silhouetted face is almost unnoticeable when you first look at the photo. Then after a few seconds it seeps into your line of site.

Congrats on the red and another awesome shot!

You rock!! Every time I check in here - you are on the front page. Kudos to you on another great piece of art. I am mistified by your ability to conceptualize and execute - Go Christophe!!

Thanks Johanna :)
She has long hair, but not THAT long! In fact it isjust braun wool that we braided: not very realistic, but I really wanted the line as a link between the silhouette and her.

I find this image a little too contrived for my taste. I also don't really feel like I get it, I guess like a poem I might not understand - which doesn't mean it's a bad poem, just means I don't get it.

i dont really understand what is meant by balance, so i have just been looking at this as a free study, that being said, WOW! this one makes you stop. almost like a Silverfoxx shot but she almost always uses herself in shots. Very strange and arresting.

masterly lighting, very creative concept, edge of the carpet looks a bit cut-out, but that is nit-picking.

This is exceptional. Truly marvelous lighting, pose, and the enigmatic silhouette profile. Is it his vision. Is it her nightmare? Splendidly conceived and art directed.
