Thank you for all the comments! I knew it wasn't technically the best photo I took all year but I found it such a gripping subject. I was out camping and our dogs kept gnawing at something in a pile of brush. At first I thought it was a deer but upon further investigation I found it to be a dog (must have been a lost pet). The countenance on the skull was too intriguing not to photograph. We were pretty far out in the woods and didn't have any of my gear so I balanced my d90 on a rock to try and offset the stillness of death with a little moving water. Did the best I could!

Oh wow! What a find. Both gross and fascinating. It looks like what is left of the animal's nostril is twisted around on it's skull. This suggests to me that is was devoured by a predator. Glad you took a risk with this one and didn't play it safe with something more acceptable. My highest vote so far in this challenge.

Can't wait to read your comments. LOL I'm in the medical field and even I find this nasty. But the photo it self is great! Nice color, contrast, angle. Good work and Good luck.

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: What an arresting image - certainly not something you see everyday. The preciseness of your presentation of the skull, upon a table of rock, is very much in keeping with the positioned skulls of still-life tradition; but here with the natural backdrop and the uncompromising anatomy of the skull make our consideration of life and death all the more pronounced.

Critical stuff: Nothing at all

Overall: I wouldn't have it on my wall but I certainly can appreciate what you've made here.

Gross. And cool. I just wish that thing stood out more from the background. It loses quite a bit of oomph with the way it blends in with the rocks. (It's basically the same color as the top center rock.)

The stillness of death contrasted by the movement of life (water). Very interesting. Might be a little underexposed but it goes with the dark theme of death I guess. The subject is very sharp and stands out quite well from the BG. Made me think - but very macabre

Disturbing somehow. Was it a bear of some kind? Did you place the remains in this position or did you find it this way?
