When I went to the Ren Fair this year, I did so with the intent on breaking out of my mold. It seems like every year I go and simply photograph the joust, and the action of performers. This year, I wanted to get some of the other people in a natural state, i.e. the vendors and lesser known performers. This gentleman was sitting outside a booth waiting for customers to walk up. I took position about 25 feet away and waited for him to look at me. He finally did, but only for a moment and I fired the shutter and got this frame.

*** Post Challenge- Ummm Wow... I am totally stoked. I wasn't sure whether or not the score would be enough to ribbon. I didn't post my score all week in the thread because truthfully, it kept slowly going up and I didn't want to jinx it. Thanks to everyone for all the kind wishes and thanks to all those who've helped me improve, you know who you are.

This is one Hermit character... very nice shot. With all those rings he has, he very well might be a real wizard :-]

Verrry nice! I love the jovial spirit you captured. So many of these types of portraits are so serious. This is delightful! Congratulations on your red ribbon!

Thoroughly average worldly old man picture.

However, unlike a gypsy or any other 3rd world oddity, this is just a regular guy in a costume. You found a regular guy - someone just like you or me - and made him look like a star. You took Joe and made him in to King Henry.

How often do you get to do that?

great portrait. if i hadn't read your comments on it, i would've thought you got this guy to pose for you. either way, it works very well... most likely better because it's a candid and he's eyeing you a bit suspiciously. congrats!

Lovely shot, I like that you chose B&W. I gave it a 9. The light on his cap and beard provide great texture, and the cap, beard, and the rings on his hand provide a nice triangle of interest that holds my eye. Congratulations on your first ribbon and a PB!

Nice photo of a well fed peasant. A hermit wearing so many rings and a fashionable hat?

Hmm, looks more like a Renaissance Fair performer. ;-)
Crazy cool patterns in the beard. Ideally could use a little more light on the face, maybe the hat caused a shadow. Not sure if B&W was the optimal choice here, as tarot cards are generally colorful.

Nicely framed and exposed. I wonder what this looks like in color. Seems like there could be some really nice mixtures of colors in this.

I really like this image, it is very well done, but he looks more like a Magician to me. The rings would indicate worldly wealth, more suitable to a wizard or magician. This brings my score points down, but the image is really well done.
