The moon reflection is pretty easy. After extracting the moon from the original picture and importing it into the new one, it will sit on its own layer in Photoshop. Just duplicate the layer, invert it vertically, position it where it makes sense, add some Gaussian blur to it, and maybe some other filter like glass or ocean ripple so it fits in better in the water. The light on the Fisherman is natural light. The photo was taken before it got dark, I made it look like it was taken at night in post-processing.
03/30/2011 03:25:17 PM
OK...I'll stop asking questions soon......How did you get the moon reflection in the lake since the moon itself was a composite insert?
As you can guess I am a novice and would love to learn some of your skills. Jim

Am loving this photo......Is that a car headlights that lit up the fisherman?

Thank you for your response.....I will try what you instructed. I have underexposed in the past and still the moon came out blown out.....I was thinking a filter might work...but......am not sure.....
Am using a 5D MII as well.....have a 70-200 & 2X extender as well. Jim

Would you mind sharing how you took your picture of the moon? I just can't figure it out...always comes blown out for me?

Thanks, jimet00@hotmail.com Jim

I used my 70-200mm mounted on my Canon Extender EF 2x which basically brought the moon closer by factor of 2. Still, the moon was fairly small in my frame. The most important thing for me was to make sure the moon was sharp, so I had to have a fairly fast shutter speed (at least 1/125 sec). The camera was in Av mode so I had to adjust the ISO to get the shutter speed that I wanted. Because it had started to get dark, the camera meter thinks that it needs to overexpose in order to compensate for the dark skies (since the dark skies were in the frame too), hence the moon would come out blown out. What you need to do is to underexpose relative to what the camera says. I always use my exposure bias wheel on my 5D Mark II. I think I went -1 for this one. I didn't care about the sky coming out dark because it was the moon that was important to me. I was planning on extracting the moon out of that picture and stick it into another. Make sure you are on tripod for this. I hope this helps.

This is really beautiful. It was the first one that caught my eye. I was sure it was taken with a 16-35 2.8 lens though. I'm surprised it's the 24-105. Dang, I'm going to carry that around with me more!:)

Breathtaking, and a ribbon winner. It's images like this that make me feel like SUCH a beginner. And yet, I'm inspired to keep trying. If there were anything to pick on it's that the fisherman is not nearly as visible as I'd like. Perhaps a different tone (orange? red?) vest. Great imagination and execution. (Not voting)

This is such a great photo - you nailed the fishing landscape, nailed the moon, and successfully combined them in photoshop (I assume). Great job - this will almost definitely ribbon.
