Ok so I went with a safe "copy" of his subject matter here.
I tried to copy his lighting and I found that most of his lighting seemd to come from above to accentuate the curves and some from the front to give some detail in the depths of the cuves.
This is not the most unusual pepper I have ever seen but it made for an intersting photo as I had to use a wide light source above the pepper to light the entire top curve and I also used a wide light souce in the front to light the front of the papper without having one bright spot.
Manual blend of 3 exposures using techniques found on Hougaard Malan Website and Tony Kuyper Photography Website. These techniques have changed the way I will edit all future advanced editing techniques.

Well it dropped further but by the looks of it so did everyone else. I am very happy with my first HM. Thanks to everyone for the kind comments about the editing, lighting and that Weston himself would be proud of me for doing this haha. What an honour!

Wow a ribbon at last! Sorry to vawendy for losing out after the recalculation. I am thrilled though and I was especially proud of how well I thought I managed to capture Weston's style. A big thanks to everyone for the wonderful comments.

I can't believe I missed this. At the time my Father had just had a massive stroke so I guess I wasn't around much online.
Congrats on a fabulous find, perfect shot with super processing and the yellow.

Greetings from the Critique Club! You requested an in-depth critique of your image and her it is:

Or is it? I just critiqued the 4th place winner, and now I get the Yellow Ribbon to critique! This is an amazingly good image. In fact, it was one of my personal favorites. The deep tones contrasted with the most outstanding lighting are wonderful. Your subject is suitably Westonian. My sense is, you did your homework on Weston and it really paid off here.

Congrats on the (belated) ribbon, and on nailing this challenge in an excellent way.

Best,

Alicia

Congratulations on the well deserved ribbon with this breathtaking recreation. It's like you've found Weston's hidden notes on the Pepper image, this is so perfect. I was trying to get the same result but gave up too early. Very inspiring and a lot to learn, thank you for sharing the technique.
Also - big congrats on your first ribbon! All respect to the first two, but I think this should have been the blue as a crown to this fantastic challenge.

I feel at liberty to safely say that this had ribbon written all over it Westonian style, but DPC styles & tastes pushed it to 5. Congrats on you first HM. You nailed it.

My favourite pepper shot so far, great texture and lighting. Shame about the imperfection though, given it's an advanced editing challenge you could have cloned it out perhaps.

Yeah, I see the Weston in this shot. I love the melted face/curved body shape of the pepper.

Really good light and form and texture. I think you did a fine job with Weston's style.

The lighting and processing on this image is in another class. I love this and the form chosen here beyond the rational logical thing for a pepper. Makes it work and upping this from 7 - 8

This has a lot of curves...the folds give it nice contrast

Perfect, as far as the Weston style is concerned. (Except maybe a 4x5 crop would be even more Wetonesque.) For me, achieving the wonderful tones you have here was not possible due to my skill level. 9

Excellent rendition, the best pepper in the challenge. But not original. There is even an imperfection, just like the original.

This might be the closest entry I've seen in terms of recreating Weston's style. Although there have been many veggies, nudes, and shells, this one has achieved that marvelously rich lighting AND dof. The tonal range takes my breath away and the sheen on the pepper is perfect, as is the texture of the bg surface. I see this placing at the top, or at the very least on the fp. (not voting)

This is one of the most attempted shots in this challenge, but no one came as close to nailing it as you did. Wonderful use of light.
