Challenge: Edward Weston (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Canon EOS-7D
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Location: Los Angeles CA
Date: Mar 28, 2011
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 160
Shutter: 1/160
Date Uploaded: Mar 29, 2011

To me, the style that stuck out most was the use of curves in a photo. I feel most people will vote this down for being in color. But his emphasis was not on processing and if it was I dont think he did a great job of it.
Thats why I chose this photo, because of the photos and I think it conveys the style of Weston well.

curves indeed - but the crop appears wrong and Weston didn't use strobe flashes

I like this shot a lot, but it doesn't seem Westony to me. I think this approach has promise and is certainly a creative way to try to capture the Weston spirit. As much as I love the intensity gradient on the edges of the Tronesque smoke, it evokes the sense of depth that Weston seems to flatten out into abstraction. Whether or not the trailing/weaker edges of the smoke are in focus, they seem out of focus, again defeating what I think Weston would strive for in this shot. Finally, I don't think the form is the star here and it doesn't lend for ambiguity. The smoke itself automatically lends itself to abstraction, so it can't be abstracted further. A tighter crop may have tricked the eye into seeing something else, and that's where I think this type of approach could have some Westonish promise. As is I think it misses that mark.

I hate voting on shots like this. Its beautiful. It has nothing to do with the challenge. black and white or free study, full marks. Weston or water bottle...Im not seeing how this fits.

I do love the technique, the line looks like the neck of a cello, a great capture.

Nice. Would have been better without color.
