Challenge: Square Crop II (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: Surfing
Camera: Canon EOS-7D
Lens: Tamron AF 18-270mm F/3,5-6,3 Di II VC LD Aspherical [IF] macro for Canon
Date: Apr 28, 2011
Date Uploaded: Apr 28, 2011

This was taken in California, Del Mar on the pier there. Great conditions that week as you can see. The water was an amazing green and light blue. When put into Photoshop though and lightened, it almost came out unrealistic. So this took about 304986304978 edits.

~~~
Now this square crop issue. When editing it, I cropped it to a square. Granted I eyeballed it. To me it still looks square.
When I started to get a couple of comments about it not being square, I looked through all the other photos in the challenge. They all looked square to me as well. But when KarenNfld pointed otu how to use the EXIF data thing, it really does show that I am not a square. BUT I still see a square. I pointed out that I was not square in the thread and I immediately dropped from 7.569 to 6.4 over 2 days.
It went back up nicely after a while, there are other people as well that think it is square.
The photo was out there to be judged by others, if they thought it was a square, they had all the evidence to see that and vote accordingly
So I believe in the end, it is how we see it, we all know that the voters will DNMC harshly , even if it is a pretty picture.
So I take it that a lot of other people saw it square as well.
So thank you everyone for the comments and the thoughts behind them. I appreciate them!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well, I am officially the dumbest arse in the world. I just checked after screeching NOOOOO at the computer, and guess what, I took it on the 23rd.

I am a dumbarse who can not make a square or tell the right date (I had gone to CA to shoot, shot, but did not have my laptop, so downloaded everything 5 days later, didnt even bother to look at the date stamp as I was sure I shot these in Del Mar and not Huntington. It would appear that my head is not in the game anymore and I need to fix that)

To crop a perfect square in Photoshop, press c for the crop tool, click anywhere and drag.. then hold the shift key ===> Square crop. You can also use the marquee selection tool (m) and click-drag-hold shift to get a square selection, which you can then (assuming around Photoshop CS2 or newer) move around before choosing Image->Crop.

Great image BTW, sorry you took it on the wrong day.

LOL...I can't believe that after you posted that it wasn't square the image fell by a point ! You do know that voters must have linked you with your other great surf image along with the posts in the forums....yikes !!!! Watch what you say in there for now on ! :-)

These are some great shots and I hope to see more.

On the square issue....this one looked just as square as any. To measure pixels is insane. If you're going to measure this and vote down then you should ONLY do so if you are going to measure ALL SHOTS IN THE CHALLENGE.

Absolutely awesome picture! Maybe if you reduced your age from 95, it would improve your organizational abilities... ;-p

Well Juliet, I am so sorry for you DQ, but then on the other hand I am elated to get the blue. Nevertheless you have the knowledge, that yours was the best photo. Not so long ago I had my blue DQ, because of a silly and totally unnecessary processing fault.
I guess this is how one learns to be more careful with details. Keep it up and we will meet again. Ruedi

Arrrrgh! The infamous wrong date in the camera. Been there but never on a blue, and caught it before submission. Still an excellent image, and definitely worthy of the blue. (as attested by the votes)

PS: I see it as square as well.

Gosh, Honey - I am so sorry!!! What a brilliant photo - and now DQ'd. But, it's brilliant nonetheless. And it was the Blue in the eyes of the majority of voters - so there you go. OX

Congratulations on your Blue Ribbon. I gave this a high score, too. You might have won the blue with a square crop, too. It's now water under the bridge.

Juliet - I just hope I can get some surf shots this good someday in the future. It is a credit to the quality of the photo that you won the Blue in a challenge where your photo doesn't even meet the challenge! Great photo!

The only thing stopping this from reaching ten-dom is that I'm not sure if a square crop really helped this out. It is a beautiful shot, love the color density.

Must be some other way of scoring a picture that is beyond one's technical understanding and that can be truly appreciated without being artistically affected by it.
This is a very good picture in a very special domain. The last wave.

Wonderful in every way. I LOVE those colours - it's as if the water were internally lit.

I just realized that this isn't actually square and much as I love the image, I have to deduct something from the score I initially gave it. Sorry. I'll still put it in my faves.

Gorgeous colours in the water, wonderful action but this is not a square crop! I can excuse a couple of pixels off but not this many, sorry. After all square crop is the theme of this challenge.
