Great Horned Owl mated pair in the old growth forest. It was snowing moderately hard. I think the snowflakes add an element of interest, but will be a distraction to some. The similarity of color and contrast to the old aspen trunk is one of the elements of interest. They are very well camouflaged. From a distance, these buys blend into the forest.

These are wild birds in the wilderness. The degree of difficulty in this shot is very high. This shot should not be compared to photographs of those poor birds in captivity.

The comment suggesting the background was too busy and the image needed a narrow depth of field did not take into consideration the wild nature of these owls. Many people are accustomed to seeing captive owls in tethers at menageries or rehab centers. Again, these are wild owls in the wilderness. This is what a nature shot in natural habitat looks like. There are no confinement leashes on these birds.

Some comments indicate the person has never seen wild owls in a snow storm in the wilderness.

I think the comments on oversharpening are from people not understanding this was captured in a snowstorm. Those are snow flakes in the DOF plane. Between the camera and the subjects are many OOF snowflakes.

Just noticed it is the people from Florida who have never seen snow!

How fortunate that you saw them, AND that you were able to capture them so magnificently. Pay no attention to those snow-deprived folks.

Great Horned are fabulous birds and very elusive.
Well captured and bravo for seeing them and capturing them through the snow.

I didn't vote on it because I didn't understand the snowstorm part of the title. I thought I was missing something.

EDIT: The comment above is the last "after the challenge" comment I will make to this photographer. I will still comment on any image during the challenge.

Too much detail enhancement ... looks unnatural and busy. Nice capture though.

Two points for Darwin. Outstanding. I didn't see them either. Then -- those eyes. Startling.

these owls seem like they could be soooooo much better...to me (on my screen) they are dull and flat in tone...curves/levels would go a long, long way here...your noise filter seems to have done some very weird stuff here.

Very nice, although the background is way too busy. This would have been perfect with a larger aperture to blur out the background. But i'm guessing this is a long telephoto and is at its full aperture.

An astonishing picture that goes far, far ahead of all bird shots. Excellent work!
