A candid shot. Not posed -- not setup.

My husband and son went with me to Colonial Williamsburg on Mother's Day to shoot for the fences challenge. (Thanks, boys!!)

I had hoped for a bird on one of the interesting fences.

I didn't have much luck with that.

I did find a squirrel, though:

(they do seem to be my lot in life)

I found a bird in front of a fence.


I even found a rabbit!


But as we were walking around, I saw a family about a block away. Two little girls in sundresses. One in an orange dress with a big straw hat, the other in a sundress of cool colors. The girl in the hat was standing on the fence, looking at the horses. It was the perfect shot!! I was too far away!!

I started running. My 7D with the 100-400L lens around my neck.

I stumbled, I started to fall. I almost caught my balance. But twisted my ankle and went down. Saved the camera though! Got up and hobbled towards the shot.

Hat girl had gotten down and was running along the fence.



But cool color girl was still there, and I was able to get the shot.

I was disappointed that I had missed hat girl, so I asked the family for permission to photograph her. The problem is, I'm still so incredibly uncomfortable doing this, that even though the family said yes, I was nervous and trying to hurry. So once she climbed on the fence, I didn't pay attention to setup, background, anything.



The candid shot was so much better. I love how she's on the sides of her feet.

It was a wonderful Mother's Day!

btw, yes, it is a real fence with real horses inside. :D

Just left a comment on an outtake of the other girl. Now looking back at this one, I'm not sure. :) they both are so beautiful! I gave you a 9 :).

Ohhh Wendy this was beautiful, and one of the shots I thought would knock me outta top 10!! Congratulations for yet another top 10... some day I want to grow up and be as consistent in the top 10's as you!!!!!

I gave one 10 and two 9's. This was one of my 9's and the only one of my top three not to ribbon. A truely beautiful image. Congrat's on a top 10 finish.

beautiful colors and details, the white line around the arm of the little girl maybe caused by thi high contrast could be removed easily.
