Challenge: Silhouette At Night (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D90
Lens: Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D
Location: Cleeve Hill, Cheltenham
Date: Jun 7, 2011
Aperture: f7.1
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/4000
Date Uploaded: Jun 9, 2011

Taken while my mate and I were training on Cleeve Hill. We both train in Kung Fu and find the hill a great place for weapons training as it is out of the way. The sun was almost down and was allowing for some wonderful silhouettes. I took a whole series which came out quite nice.

Only post processing that has been done on this image is cropping. I cropped some of the right off to balance the subject across the image. I am not experienced in it yet in PP so I din't play with it too much.

Hey All,

Thanks for your comments. I agree with them all and have some things to work on that can improve the image further. Funnily after reviewing the other images this is the one I like the least because the speak runs through the clouds and leaves all that empty space above it. . I have another image where Olly is kicking and thrusting the spear, this his body filling the empty space on the left of the image but his leg and speak positioned in balance with the clouds and sun.

But, all in all I am really chuffed to come 10th out of 54 with some great comments and suggestions for improvement.

Thank you all for voting and commenting.

Nice, just a shame about the lens flare on the subjects left sleeve. You said you're not too familiar with post processing, so fyi that can be easily removed with the 'spot removal' tool in lightroom or the 'spot healing brush' in photoshop.

Only for the flae on the sleeve I would give this a ten . 9

Great composition and crop. I would've preferred a sky that makes a bit more of a statement, but in the same sense, I like the fact that you didn't 'over do it' and kept it simplistic. 8

Nice action silhouette

I like it; the sky behind could have a bit more contrast- but what you give up in true powerful silhouette you gain in depth and detail.

interesting environment, and gestures. the small details of the grass add a lot to the shot.

I don't quite think that sunset qualifies as night, especially when I can see the sun still in the image.

Nice, might have worked better with the top and bottom cropped a little more, and that sky is crying out for some more post processing colour. Still, good though.
