i see a tripod on the video camera - but i am not sure why the still photo needed a tripod for the photo to come out...

Interesting shot. Seems like it could be telling us a story, but what? Looks like one participant has some karate robes on, so is it some sort of class?

Obvious tripod use: The tripod in the shot itself is very obvious. So on that front it meets perfectly. For the camera taking the overall photo, that could have definitely been done without a tripod. At first, I didn't really see the tripod in the shot, so you may get some people wondering how this fits the challenge.

Obvious use of a tripod, or any other long-term stabilization tool (1-10 *is not the score of the shot though*): 2
Although a tripod is in the shot, one wasn't needed for the shot to turn out well. It could have been done handheld.

The cam in the photo is on a tripod but is the cam you used to take this shot on a tripod?
