Davenport California, there is this pier out there that used to be used for the cement factory. When they ran out of limestone it shut down. They blew up the pier but these pylons still sit there.

I saw this picture on google when I was looking for pier pylons to shoot for this very type of photo. I came across this and finally got the chance to check it out. Its a great town and pretty small. The people are super nice and it has some beautiful beaches and surf spots.

Assuming this image was taken during the day and not at night, what ND filter did you use for this?

Like Levt said, hoping is a better word. If you dont shoot for the best and have high expectations for your work then your work will not
improve as quickly. I want to be the best and so I shoot like it, and that mentality has done me well in my professional career.

This is literally my favorite picture that I have taken so far, I only want the best for it, I take a lot of pride in them, just like they are my kids or something.

And Yes Deb, I like the birds as well, its the cherry on top for me. I dont know if they were sleeping or not but thats my best assumption. I would like to come back to this town, it was a lot of fun.

No matter what you say, you'll always offend someone, you go with your bad self :)

Sorry you're disappointed with the ribbon color. I'll take it off your hands if you don't want it. :-) Still can't get over the length of the exposure, and the sleeping birds!

I'm sorry to see, however, that it wasn't enough for you: "Well Im glad I got a ribbon, but I was expecting something more than a yellow."

Im happy and content to get the ribbon I just expected more out of the picture thats all. Nothing wrong with wanting to go for the top right?

Of course! Wanting to go for the top is natural. Maybe you meant "expecting" as "hoping." I just get tired of others on DPC who indicate via their comments that they feel they're entitled to the highest honors, as if the voters erred in choosing another shot to get a better score.

Very inspiring, a wonderful example of what can a (very) long exposure achieve. Congratulations on your great photo and on the ribbon: I like your photo much more than mine!

I'm sorry I didn't vote in this one, as this would be a 10. Not what you want to hear, I know, but it's good to remember that these photos have legs beyond DPC. Incredible image.

Congratulations ... I have been to that exact spot many times and have some interesting shots of the pylons. Great idea using such a long exposure - really made it an exceptional shot.

Obvious use of a tripod, or any other long-term stabilization tool (1-10 *is not the score of the shot though*): 10
Looks like a former bridge or pier. The water is unrecognizable. Very cool.

Very cool minimalistic image, especially with the birds in there. A definite stand out from the crowd.

Obvious tripod use: Very high.

43 minutes! I'm amazed the birds stayed still long enough to be able to make them out at all. I can only assume that was taken at night and that they were asleep. All makes for an interesting shot though.
