One of the best dpc titles ever.

Sad about the size. I'm guessing you'll never get this comment - but anyway - good job!

~Critique Club Comment~

COMPOSITION- I think you've got a really strong composition. Your lighting and detail are perfect. I read about the mistake in making it smaller and I think some may have knocked you down a little for it. You've got a good balance of colors and how much of the fork that is in the shot is great.

BACKGROUND- Very simple, the redish/purple background fits great.

TECHNICAL- Focus and detail are great. You've shot this at a perfect DOF and shutter speed.

MY OPINION- I think this shot is great. It's kind of funny but it is life size. Congrats on a wonderful shot.

Gosh, what an idea! Again, I really liked this shot...

This is a great idea, but way too small to give this any kind of critique on quality. - Good Luck

I really wish the photo was a little bigger, I'd love to see the snail better. I like the shot, and the unique idea, and I love your background, it gives the shot a very rich, warm feeling that I like. 8

This is a really nice shot, but why so small?
Would have loved to see it a lot bigger.
12/14/2002 10:01:04 PM
This is a nice simple shot. Very well composed. The reflection off of the shell is a little much but still a very good shot overall.
12/14/2002 04:06:27 AM
wow! what an awesome shot! the only thing that bugs me is that is it is so small! it seems hardly bigger than a thumbnail, and with a picture this cool, you really want to be able to view it larger to see all the great detail! from what i can tell, tho, it looks great---i love the lighting and the background--and the composition is fabulous! awesome!
12/14/2002 12:29:37 AM
Wonderful!
12/13/2002 10:18:33 AM
I feel that you needed to bring out the detail under the snail, and why not make it as big as DPC allows. It seems subdued due to its small size.
12/13/2002 01:09:53 AM
Wow! Your decision to make this quite small actually works for me, although I'm sure you're getting a lot of complaints. On my monitor, that fork is about 1:1, ie. the size of a real fork. This makes me appreciate how small the snail is. The composition is really tight, the wonderful S curve of the fork and snail just makes me go all gooey :). I love the rich colour of your background, it really sets off the snail.

Great photo!
12/12/2002 10:47:38 PM
Ha! Great picture! Lighting is a tiny bit harsh on the back of the snail .
12/12/2002 06:04:07 PM
great shot! hope your not going to eat that!
12/12/2002 05:46:30 PM
Great title! Isn't this a little bit small of a view? (Was that part of message?) Great catch of the antennie sticking out. That snail seems sooo very small! 8 Swash

So what is it with dpc adn small animals on eating utensils. Just kidding.

This shot is very well done. The background color lends a bit of sophistication to it, and the lighting illuminates everything well without blowing out in spots. Great focus, as well.
12/12/2002 01:22:41 PM
I'm sure you've heard it a number of times now, but this photograph is way too small to do any kind of accurate critique on. The shot itself, if big enough to view, would have been awesome. The yellow and silver on maroon works incredibly well.
12/12/2002 12:41:19 PM
A good composition. But I´m not so sure about the dark background. Perhaps some light from the left had made this a really great shot. Now it´s just great. Rather high score anyhow.
12/12/2002 10:29:31 AM
Interesting. Good artistically and technically (though the small format makes it hard to judge photographic quality to the fullest.) I will say that I might have been tempted to boost color saturation and contrast.
12/11/2002 12:29:26 PM
Nice details. Good colors and composition. I would have liked to see more lighting on the snail rather than on the fork though. = 7
12/11/2002 12:02:43 PM
I'm probably not the first to mention this, but other than the size being so small it's hard to see the details, this is a really good picture. Nice clean lines, good color and lighting.
12/11/2002 11:40:45 AM
It's a bit small, but the detail looks good. I really like the concept and idea behind this shot. Your angle and framing/cropping are good, with the exception of the size. color looks nice as well. The snail and fork stand off from the backgrounf cery nicely, and the lighting looks alright too. Good luck in the challenge.
12/11/2002 10:39:22 AM
Bigger is better. I'd like to be able to see the photo a little better. Nice concept for a shot. Lighting looks pretty good as well as the angle. From what I can see, nice shot. - Inspzil

Great shot, good colours, and an interesting subject. However, the size of the image hides much of the detail, which is a shame. It also may have been worth flipping left to right, so that the curve of the fork leads the eye from the left side of the image to the snail.
12/11/2002 05:06:21 AM
This is a great shot with great detail. Why did you make it so small? Well one thing for sure is that this is life size shot it looks like.
12/11/2002 01:08:25 AM
And I love Escargot too...I will probably always think of this shot now. A little soft on focus and I would like the photo a bit larger. Good composition and great idea. DPz
12/10/2002 11:57:33 PM
Oh no is right. Sickening thought but beautiful photo. In this case less is more. The simplicity is part of the beauty of this shot. Good clear focus. Great composition with really good execution. One of my favorites.
12/10/2002 11:02:57 PM
ahh haa! a prime example of what we need more of around here.. a touch of humor! bonus points to you! great lighting, and creative composition... the size is a little small though... I would like it even more if it were larger or blown up.
12/10/2002 10:43:46 PM
nice composition and creativity. when i look at this photo i want it to be larger so i can see it better. maybe i'm just getting old or something.
12/10/2002 09:46:55 PM
Great color choices for this clever composition! I hope you compensated your model well, and set him free somewhere nice...
12/10/2002 08:37:27 PM
Interesting photo. I like the graduated lighting in the background.
12/10/2002 06:24:17 PM
This is a picture I would LOVE to see this bigger, but then again it looks life size..... Good job.
12/10/2002 02:03:34 PM
Too funny. :)
12/10/2002 08:35:06 AM
I'd like this bigger!
12/10/2002 12:18:23 AM
It's a great photo, and I love the concept. The background could have been a little lighter, or had a little more light. Good job! Cub
12/09/2002 10:11:15 PM
I don't think I like how small the picture is. It seems to take away from the picture overall. The picture itself looks great though, I just wish it was bigger.
12/09/2002 10:02:31 PM
Hmmm...why so small? I have no idea how you managed to get the snail to do that (it is real isn't it??) but it's a very clever and well executed shot. The focus on the fork seems a bit soft, but doesn't detract overall.
12/09/2002 09:12:35 PM
Ah man! this is awesome. Could have competed with It's a Frog eat Frog World that won the macro contest. Why so small? Jacko.
12/09/2002 07:30:40 PM
im curious about your thought process in coming up with this shot, which i find to be engaging. did you think of the pun and then think oh that would make a great photo? let me know : )
12/09/2002 07:02:49 PM
Dern cute, good compostion......good light......good color...........
WHY so far away?? Focus is a tiny bit soft for my liking. Nice work here. Justine
12/09/2002 05:19:57 PM
Very nice movement in this one + a subtle background in every ways
12/09/2002 05:08:24 PM
Nice one, but I would have liked it bigger (not that that's going to affect my vote).
12/09/2002 04:12:20 PM
Great composition. The small image size, I think complements this photograph, it adds intimacy, and creates a relationship with the snail. Great job!
12/09/2002 11:35:33 AM
Taking advantage of the new size limits i see :) Good choice as well. I think this photo really needs to be cropped small. It gives a cute feeling about the snail and makes it seem small, like it really is. I think if you were closer it would take away that nice mood of the photo. Is this scale 1:1 ? The fork looks about normal size. Great photo. 9
12/09/2002 11:26:11 AM
Bit teeny but nice composition and lighting.
12/09/2002 10:56:45 AM
The picture is great. Focus and colors are good, although a little dark. I love that now we can experiment with different aspect ratios and sizes, but still, I would've liked to see this one in a larger size.
12/09/2002 10:29:28 AM
Terrific concept and execution. Lighting, coloring, contrast are all good. Composition is very good. You handled the shiny surface of the fork very well. I'm sure lots of people already told you the pic is too small. Scores high with me anyway for being a good one.
12/09/2002 09:47:42 AM
Hmmm...for me, this image is just too small. I really would have like to have seen it in a 640x480 size :( Nice composition and colors. Cute title. The lighting is a tad harsh in a couple of spots. 7
12/09/2002 01:53:13 AM
beautiful life size format........ thoughtful picture
12/09/2002 01:29:39 AM
Very cute. nice photo, great humor. I can almost guess whose photo this is??
12/09/2002 12:31:10 AM
This is potentially a very good photo... I would highly recommend choosing a larger size in the future so details can be viewed. Detail is important in a shot like this, and at this size, it can't be seen.... - setzler
12/09/2002 12:26:02 AM
I know the rules state that you can submit a photo of this size, but I really wish people would use that for panorama's and such. It is really difficult to give you the full benefit of a proper critique and vote on an image of this size, where I cannot discern details... and I have a 19 inch monitor. I can imagine what people with smaller monitors are thinking...

Now... it seems like a very interesting subject. I would like it to be flipped horizontally, imho, so that my eye is led off the fork with the snail, as the motion is going in that direction.
