One challenge that I really wanted to do well in was this one! I don't think I had been more excited about a challenge so much before, so I wanted to capture something unique.

I sat in my car for half an hour in Grand Teton and started watching the bisons. Occasionally I would see a flock of birds land on or near a bison and every time the bison would move, the flock of birds would all simultaneously take off. I figured it would be cool to capture this at the perfect moment where the birds had just taken off so they are in my frame in bunches. I also wanted to show a tiny bit of movement and blur in birds' motions. In this instance, the calf was running in front and the mother had just started to take off. The reason they were running was because they wanted to cross the road (I think). The birds all flew in the same direction as the bison and the calf were moving which gave the impression of a stampede to me.

I decided to do very little to no processing to this image because this is how National Geographic would want to see it.

Absolutely LOVE this capture with both scenic and nature in action rolled into one. The movement of the calf and the flight of birds brings a feel of motion and 'sound' to a normally peaceful scene of the bison foraging (I can almost hear the chatter of the birds and the flapping wings). The calf in his/her playfulness seems to be playing/racing with the birds. Love how the bison in the forefront has turned their head to seemingly look the observer in the eye. Fabulous work and I can very well see this in the NG magazine talking about the bison of the plains.

Thank you, CNovack! Always enjoy reading your comments very much!

You come up with surprises every time and also succeed in your attempts. You are talented and hardworking. 7+ scores and ribbons are becoming your habit nowadays, huh? Great going! God bless your talents!

Hope National Geographic sees this great image! :)

It's exactly the type of wildlife shot which feels alive and puts the viewer right there. Therefore quite worthy of the National Geographic! The birds' motion blur does it for me. The lighting is also great. Just the composition feels a bit wrong, I guess not enough space in front of the calf.

Phenomenal capture!! If it weren't for the birds it would look like a museum diorama.

Superb shot. The sudden activity of the foal and perhaps also the parent behind it has startled the birds. You have captured this moment well. The triangle formed between all three bison, plus the motion of the birds give life to a still image. I think it would be published in NG.
