A few years ago about a dozen of us were trail riding on Mount Diablo and we staked our horses out in the shade and sat down on the ground to eat. A few moments later we discovered we were in a lady bug swarm, millions of these guys were inches thick in the shade, they were up the horses legs, into our food, under our shirts. Pretty creepy. It seems these guys migrate in big swarms through the year, winter in the valley, summer in the mountains

well I guess it just goes to show that ALL CHALLENGE RULES must be read and followed. Taking your photo after the challenge is posted is part of the challenge. Even just a couple of days, no exceptions!

This is a fabulous capture. Growing up in Thousand Oaks, Ca. I would look forward to finding these ladybug colonies in the bushes and trees of our yard and surrounding hills each summer. I don't know if they still inhabit that area, but I'm thrilled to see they do indeed still gather for a summer party. oh, and a big congratulations on your 5th place finish!

I love this one. It has artistic context, and is a nice change from the garish bugs eyeballs in the rest of ours :)

Congrats on a solid placement with what I thought was the most interesting and fun to view shot in the challenge, and there were a lot of very good entries, so good for you for finding these gals. Nothing in the challenge description required it to be a macro shot, this fits the challenge perfectly.

Oh man I never thought this photo would do so well! And I definitely didn't think I would be achieving my goal of getting a seven on dpc with it either, but hey no complaints, even though I did get a 1 which I think is lame :(
Thank you everyone for the great comments and votes. This was taken In Yosemite National Park, CA. And Im not sure if these are Ladybugs or Asian Beetles. And I have no idea if this is a unusual occurrence or something regular, but just thought it was awesome and had to capture it.

What a super neat shot, and now I know where it is! :) Neat! So is this a regular occurrence at this time of year, or something unusual that you managed to catch?

Oh, and you also get a :)

Wow, what a gathering! Now the question is, are those the old-fashioned lady bugs, so tame and useful, or their more ornery replacements, the Asian Beetles?

Wow. One of my favorites - one of the few that didn't give me the creepy crawlies. 10

I had to come back and give this one a ten. Everyone pretty much successfully or unsuccessfully photographed a macro. This one didn't. Instead focused on a pattern and not a bug portrait. Great job being different.
