Peach Pedal bicycle ride in Weatherford Texas. I wasn't quite up to doing the 26 or 39 mile route and 9 seemed a waste, so I decided it would be just as much fun to photograph the event. I positioned myself about 5 miles out into the route on a good hill with a view, and the lead pack was just coming across the horizon as I was parking.

Since I was going to be out there anyway, I also volunteered to be an additional SAG, and I was kept reasonably busy giving lifts to some folks who had bit off more than they could chew and had bonked. One woman had a wheel out of true, but I was able to adjust her brake clearance and she could press on. (I was surprised to learn how many people don't even know how to remove their front wheel!)At one point about 3/4 of the way through the route I had more people needing a ride than I had the ability to carry in my small pickup.

Not totally happy with this shot, but I've spent too much time on it to not enter it and see how it does. I expected the morning light would give me an awesome, easily tweaked shot, but I guess the sun wasn't quite at the right angle for my view and resulted in a flat image that needed to be cooked a little more than I liked. I could be surprised though. It's happened before. Killer shots have come in with a low 5 and stuff I expect to get slammed sometimes makes the top 10.

Roll those dice!

Post-challenge notes:
Color me surprised. Also, one of my shots of this event was used in an article on the Weatherford Democrat (They really ruined my shot with downsampling, though!) Here's how it's supposed to look:

I knew this would do well -- I really like this one! I also couldn't figure out why you were so hard on it. :)

Love the leading lines and the placement of the road, as well as the HDR feel. You owned this shot- this, as Ken said, is a solid 9.

Got an 8 from me. I think this is terrific. Combines a very interesting, multilayered landscape with the human interest of the oncoming cyclists. Congrats!

I suppose it just didn't look the way I had envisioned for something taken at about 0745. When they got up the hill and closer to me, I was much happier with the appearance, but those didn't suit the topic.

Nice use of DOF with the foreground. It really helps draw the eye down the road and away.

There is something that makes me feel uneasy about this image. It has a wavy, hazy feel but the riders are quite sharp. It must be a rough road!
