I really enjoyed this image, well, I still do! I was reading mitalapo's comment, which is actually quite accurate depending on perspective...it got me thinking...yes, the interpretation is not a story, but, for me, more of an emotional response to a seascape...if a viewer sticks around long enough to feel that emotion, eventually a story well develop even if it has nothing to do with the beach/ocean/etc. Likely more to do with something in their immediate life experience, yeah? I think you mostly hit that mark, which, I hope, is why it did so well...specifically it surrounds the shell. My initial response...why is that there? Does it belong? Ultimately it made me feel a bit lonely and out of place...maybe left behind. If you can evoke a response like that, then I personally feel the photograph is a success. I was too tired to write this out when I commented originally, so you got my clinical comment. :)

Beautiful photo and I love the hint of the sail on the horizon.

I am not voting, so you can just ignore my comment. I think this is a great photo (toning is marvelous) and a complete miss of the bspurgeon style, as it doesn't leave a lot of room to the viewer own interpretation. This continues with the title, which tries to dictate even the order of looking at things.

Coming back after I noticed Ben's "wave..shell......gull"

I'm still leaving the comment above with the caveat that it (the comment) only reflects my own subjective interpretation of Ben's style, and to show how pigheaded I can be. Hope you can forgive me.

I could definitely see this as a Ben image, although the shell seems a bit over lightened, to the point where it does not seem to be native to the scene.

An interesting composition. Lovely exposure, overall softness, and light on the damp sand. The type of shell and its position feels slightly contrived, and for me that is the antithesis of most of Ben's images. But overall a pleasing image.

excellent work! Just one thing, I think Ben might crop it differently, with less sky and more foreground sand

You've captured some of Ben's sense of gravity here.

A single shell amidst a softly blurred tide. Yep - that's Ben's style. :) 7
