Taken at the Peach Pedal just a few feet from my "Distance" entry. I put the 10-24 on, and after the thick pack of riders passed me, I sat down in the middle of the road and yelled at the oncoming riders to do a close fly-by. This shot is pretty much what I had in mind.

I like it a lot more than my distance entry, but I have a suspicion it won't sit as well with the DPC collective. There are a lot of aspects of this image that could be nitpicked on as flaws, and it is a subject that only has strong appeal for a limited subset of DPC members, but I love the shot anyway. To me this conveys much of the joy of riding a bike.

Anticipated critiques and my responses:
-Blur/distortion of bike and rider at left of frame. Well, that happens at 10mm focal length this close to the subject, and I think the blur helps to convey speed better than if it all were razor sharp.

-Subject cut off at frame edge. Yes, but that movement out of the frame is more dramatic and conveys what I want better than the version captured 1/2 second earlier. With her in the frame, it is a photo of a happy woman riding a bike. As entered, it tells me she is leaving her riding partners in the dust.

Post challenge notes:
Did about as expected with the mass appeal machine, though I did have hopes for something in the high 5's for a time. However, some great comments and a high commenter's average tells me I hit exactly the audience I was aiming it at. In spite of some critiques, I wouldn't change a thing about this.

I would've voted this a 6 or 7. I'm with you 100% on everything you said about motion and dynamism of the main subject. The rest of it didn't grab me too much, though. Now, with ominous clouds, a giant water drop in the background, and maybe some ladybugs hitching a ride ... ;)

Great perspective! I’m surprised this didn’t finish higher as well. I didn’t get a chance to vote on all the images in this challenge and didn’t get to this one, but I would have given this 7 or 8. Probably an 8 with that title.

I can't believe this finished way down the list. I gave it an 8.

Fabulous POV and framing with excellent DOF off into the distance. Love that the headless rider is motion blurred and the rest of the image not. Dry grass, winter blue sky looks decidedly southern hemisphere somewhere, SA?

hehe I think bikes have a natural slimming effect, as they instantly make you look athletic. The photo looks a bit "weighted" on the left side (pardon the pun) as there is much more to look at there than the right sky/road. I feel if you'd crop out a bit on the right side to the last biker, you'd still get the feel of the very long road you're biking on and make the front biker more the center of the photograph.

I like the crop with just part of the first rider but there is a weird angle or something to him that is distracting.. Beautiful color and texture to the photo....

Very much my kind of shot! Bikes, chopped heads, a great day to ride, wide angle... all good! All very good! Will undoubtedly be one of my favorites of the challenge, and is the first one I'm voting on. Picked it special!

Steve?
I reckon you're right in that case. Your horizon is probably involving bikes...
